I lived on Chestnut Street, part way up Telegraph Hill. I was so close to Fisherman's Wharf I could hear the walruses barking at night when I had the windows open.

Actually, they're sea lions, not walruses.

On my one trip to San Francisco, one of the places I wanted to visit most was Fisherman's Wharf, to see the sea lions (otherwise, the place seemed a total tourist trap). And walking over there, we could hear them barking while we were still several blocks away. It was very cool!

Yes; they are sea lions. I couldn't remember what they were called.

And yes, Fisherman's Wharf is a total tourist trap. I lived four blocks from it and never visited it once. And you're right that the sea lion barking carries that far -- I could hear them clearly anytime the windows were open (which in San Francisco with its Mediterranean climate  was most of the year).

I worked in the financial district, and walked to work everyday, passing right by The Condor (with Carol Doda's blinking nipples on the sign).

What a trip. What a city. It was like living in Disneyland. Now I couldn't afford the cover charge.

As a tourist, that was exactly my impression: "What a trip. What a city. It was like living in Disneyland. Now I couldn't afford the cover charge."

What I found interesting was that in the weeks leading up to my trip, it seemed that EVERYONE I knew had recommendations of things to do there and, especially, restaurants to dine at. Nearly everyone told me to avoid Fisherman's Wharf, but I was staying in a Holiday Inn only a few blocks away, and I've always loved sea lions.

SF is also the "gayest" city in the U.S. We spent a good part of one day exploring "gay stuff" in SF, and I found it fascinating.

The number of homeless people there -- everywhere! -- was also eye-opening. And this coming from a girl who lives in NYC.

P.S. All of this has nothing do with Trump. But I've never met a hijack I didn't follow...

I lived in San Francisco around 1985. I understand that it has changed substantially since then. This was early in the Reagan days, and there was still a middle class and we lacked the millions of homeless (although Ron was already beginning to fill the streets with the mentally ill).

Hijacking? We have four years until the impeachment to pick on Trump!~

That sounds a lot like NYC today. The "middle class" has been pushed far into the outer boros, or out of the City altogether. Home prices and rents are unaffordable to the average person in the city's "better" neighborhoods, including the bulk of Manhattan.

Well, if an impeachment is in the future, I doubt it will take four years to get there...

MissB - I have been to San Francisco a few times over the years.  I prefer it to Los Angeles any day. Now when I go there, I head to Sonoma or Napa Valleys.

Katie - keep speaking German.  What a turn on.  ;D

I agree. Other than the obvious touristy things, as a visitor, LA has no there there, while SF is filled with things to do and see.

And I agree about German. French is sexy, but German is kinky...

Well...nobody knows what's coming (including, obviously, me). It pretty much depends on what Trump does. But his overt and obvious conflicts of interest open the door to that occurring should a significant majority ever find it necessary.

San Diego is a fun destination but that is it for Southern Cal.

Trump will never get impeached?

And this coming from a person who predicted that Trump would never get elected?

I agree that, barring Trump's doing something outrageous, felonious, or in blatant violation of the Constitution, it would be extremely difficult to impeach Trump, especially given the current make-up of Congress.

Then again, if even a fraction of the dire assertions from the Left come true, Trump will be out of office by the end of the Summer.

Then again again, Trump isn't even in office yet, nor has he done a single thing as president...

I largely agree about LA; it's not a tourist destination. But it does have its attractions (and this from a sworn LA-o-phobe for most of my life).

In Southern California, life (and a lot of the culture) revolves around the beach. And there is no more interesting, or quintessentially California beach than Venice. There was a common bumper sticker attesting to this truth: "There is no life East of I-5".

I worked in San Francisco for a month, back in 2012 - we rented an apartment in Haight-Ashbury, & first local I spoke to was an elderly man in a rainbow shirt who skateboarded past me and offered me weed.

The workshop I was based in was a few yards off Market Street, so my journey home was a tram-ride to the end of the line in Castro, then a hike up the hill.

It is my favourite city on the planet (well, maybe a tie with Venice), and I would have moved there permanently, except for the lack of a proper health service (and being too old to be accepted by immigration...     :'( )

Not a fan of Trump either but the way a few people are using their fame as platforms, you would think he is the devil incarnate.  By now we all know he talks or tweets before thinking but let's wait until he actually is in office before we heap scorn on the guy.

I agree.

I've no problem with what you perfectly describe as "the way a few people are using their fame as platforms, you would think he is the devil incarnate." That's their right. And, at an event like the Golden Globes, that's expected (if utterly predictable). I mean, could you imagine the chorus of boos if a presenter or winner there were to have voiced support of Trump, or even cautioned people to take a wait and see attitude? They'd never work in that town again.

Most criticisms of trump thus far -- including most criticisms of Trump here on KB, have been based on what people predict he might/will do. Nothing wrong with that in theory, but, as you say, wait until he takes office and actually does something, and then "heap scorn on the guy."

Or impeach him...
  ;)
