I was under the impression this was also an opinion (non restrictive) forum where it is encouraged to start a discussion expressing an idea.
Sure, but those ideas and opinions must have merit or be subject to criticism.

Nonsense!  You understand this is 1408 right?  Somehow you also seem to think I don't have a right to my opinion.  Why?

Trump appeals to people for the same reason Putin and Geert Wilders appeal to people. Not specifically for their ideology, but because they fearlessly speak their minds. They ooze 'spine'. A quality non-existant in the other 99% of  politicians.

People are just so fucking tired of two-faced weasels they'd rather vote for the devil that'll at least do as he says. Even if it's totally fucked up shit.

Hillary Clinton? A woman who is in bed with the saudis and who has relentlessly swept all her husband's affairs under the carpet to climb the powerladder? I'd sooner trust Gemma Teller to not lie to me.

There isn't one candidate who isn't a fucked up dysfunctional mess IMO. I no longer believe any actually sane, honest and stand-up person could ever run as even a low-level politician. The sheer hatred thrown at you every day by the snakes in office would physically make you ill after just one day.

Lois, of course you have a right to an opinion, merit or not. So did chirping and so does Joan. Neither deserves snide remarks not sarcastic comments for expressing them. Therein lies my assertion of a previous administrator. I will clarify I don't agree with a lot Joan says but I will say, she is articulate in posting it.

Joan is not consistent. She will occasionally, especially after being taken to task for a post, become articulate and precise. At those times she writes here arguments very well. Other times it's disjointed, delusional, and full of hyperbole and half-truths. Sometimes simply made up from whole cloth.

There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

I just like reading the opinions of others. Somewhere in between the opposites one may find the truth.

Challenge accepted: find a knowing without a belief.

(Thank you for the welcome).

Guess it depends just how strong one's beliefs are.  Look around the world today and see what people with strong beliefs have done to the security of the world. Are we safer?

Can you be safe from fear ? Not in a lunatic asylum.

You just described delusion, I don't believe in anything. Humans made this world a mess, their delusion keeps it that way. Is there an answer, I don't think so. But there is a knowing. All there is is life and no one owns it.

Coach, Watcher, i've said this here before, just because we CAN say what ever we want in Politics and Room 1408 doesn't mean we HAVE to.
It's funny how heated people can get arguing about people who could give a crap about the little people of the United States of America. Some shmoe will get elected, and we'll spend the next four years hearing how great he's doing/how terrible he's doing. No one's going to be happy. So we should just ignore them and start picking on Canada. Phtlc would appreciate that.

I totally understand the Politics Forum and Room 1408. Just because I don't want to come here and tell everybody off doesn't mean I don't get it.
Arguing Politics is stupid and a waste of time. You can discus the subject until you turn blue, NOTHING WIL CHANGE.
Yes, you're free to say anything you want here and you say you will. Fine. A bigger person realizes it's not always about him and is willing NOT to always say or do something they can do. It's just harder to be the bigger person sometimes for some people.

I'm afraid your words here reveal that you really don't understand them, though you are far from alone in that. I agree with your "just because you can doesn't mean you should" philosophy but I don't believe most members who post in politics do so to change the world or even change a mind.

For me, discussion and arguments are educational, and I don't mean in terms of facts and figures, but in terms of human behaviour and perspectives. Exploring a topic with another person, whether it's a heated debate or just casual conversation, provides insight into how their mind works and can give you insight into how your own mind works or a new perspective on a topic you thought you had figured out.

For others, I think politics is essentially a sport and you can see how some members defend their chosen political parties with the same illogical loyalty as any sports fans. Again, I don't think the goal here is to "win" and convince the world that their chosen party is the best. I think it's more like a hobby that is taken quite seriously. After all, what good is any sport without competition?

Also, I hope you realise that if talking politics never achieved anything, both of us would be singing God Save the Queen as our national anthem...

As for 1408, it took me a long time to understand the purpose of it in the board and there are far more members than yourself that don't understand it either. It is intended as something of a relief, where grievances can be aired and hostilities can be contained, and it works pretty well for that. By all appearances, most members don't use private messages to harass or try to turn members against each other and personal insults rarely crop up outside 1408. You just have to remember that just because someone is allowed to say something, it doesn't make their words any more or less justified. Being an asshole is being an asshole in any context.

If what you say is even remotely true...."Then".......Why do so many people in 1408 take themselves so damn seriously.?

GG, I think the basis of your misunderstanding can be seen in the fact that you use two different verbs here and equate them.

I agree that "arguing" politics, or other sensitive or controversial issues, will most often prove fruitless. But "discussing" politics can prove beneficial. educational, enlightening, or, at least, entertaining.

As I've mentioned more than a few times -- and more than a few times to you -- I have changed my mind several times based on things I've read here, or based on discussions I've had here. I've changed my mind, or I've broadened my view, or I've gained insight into a topic or point of view, or -- perhaps most important -- I've come to understand others, what they believe, and why they believe it.

And that why, for me, the 1408 threads are the most important and most interesting areas of this entire Board.

Well, that, and the lesbian kissing thread....

Donald Trump seems to be determined to upset everyone, based upon his latest debate charges and attacks. His value I think is to PUSH the GOP, and Candidates to address issues of concern to regular Americans, and not PUSH the issues valued by a few large donors, such donors having their own interests, whether they donate to Democrats or Republicans.

Donald's "Code Pink" style attacks on former Presidents Bush 41, and especially Bush 43, as part of Trumps attempt to shut up, shut down !Jeb!, will ill serve Trump and the GOP, should he become the Nominee. We shall see how it all goes, including the current Primary races, and whether "The Donald" can bring himself to address actual issues, rather than such biting personal attacks.

Marco Rubio, seeking to out-trump Trump, is becoming entangled in his claims on the debate stage as well, in an attempt to disparage Ted Cruz, winding up calling Cruz names, when it was Cruz whose statements were dead accurate. Marco acts like Bill Clinton, being 'too slick by half' at times, and is good at it, until his sentence is parsed later. Whether this will affect his desire to BS some of the people all of the time, and continue to gain traction as the Primary elections proceed forward is to be determined.

Saying one thing in English, and a different thing in Spanish, then trying to ride out the news cycle disputing the transcript, versus his press handouts in English, is dubious at best. Lies matter, and disparaging a fellow Republican Candidate matters, and one can only hope the Voters recognize when they are being fooled.

Primary elections are for accumulating delegates. The comparison of candidates in pressure situations is of great value, and glib speakers gain an initial advantage. The actions of an elected official who is a candidate have a record, and when the Press takes the opportunity to research and detail a candidates record versus statements, the greater good is served.

Unfortunately, such comparisons are only well done by 'new media', as MSM (mainstream media) has little interest in other then pushing the candidates they support, and sneering about all others, so no real comparison is readily available, except to those who look for it.

Some people are like the 'slinky'. Not really good for much,
but they bring a smile to your face as they fall down stairs.

In a national USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll, likely voters were given the choice of four options - enthusiastic, satisfied, dissatisfied or scared - would they be most inclined to say the prospect of Donald Trump winning the Republican nomination or Hillary Clinton the Democratic nomination.

38% would be scared of Trump winning

33% would be scared of Clinton winning

Kind of scary.

2. In the rare occurance when I am wrong, employ rule number 1.

I think this pretty accurately describes the state of things. The GOP's dysfunction has reached a point where a clown can come in, squirt water out of his buttonairre, honk his nose, drop his drawers...and still be taken more seriously than the mainstream candidates.

Trump Is Trampling Over the GOP’s Corpse
Republican elites who want him to go away don’t realize that he’s already taken over an empty party.

The Pope has questioned Trump's status as a christian!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-us-2016-35607597

Given the general Republican assumption that they are god's chosen few, destined to run God's Holy American Empire (It's in the bible, people!!), when I heard that on the car radio I actually had to pull over until I stopped laughing.

As I type, the BBC news is running a clip of Trump holding up the bible he was given by his mom...
