Actually, you don't have the full story here, Farmer Miles. And while I have no problem with you adding your comments to this, or challenging me, I respectfully disagree.
In my very first post on this board I wrote mute when I should have written moot, and Katiebee jumped on it. I thought that was a bit harsh, but I said nothing. A while ago (I don't remember exactly when) I noticed that Katiebee misused "et al." in a sentence and I pointed it out, with a comment that it was "payback for her jumping on my first post on the board...". I also agreed that I had, in fact, substituted mute for moot (acknowledging that I had made the error) and also making it clear that my pointing out her misuse of "et al." was 1) friendly, not antagonistic, but also 2) pointed -- everyone makes minor grammatical errors on forums, and she shouldn't jump on mine unless she wants me to do the same with hers.
End of story.
Until yesterday, when Katiebee, out of the blue and without provocation, brought up my mute/moot switch up again in reply #1330 in this thread, and I responded in the very next comment. That began a discussion that leads all of the way here.
I'm not sure why she felt inclined to bring this up again, as I considered the subject long since closed. I think she was just ribbing me, and I responded by ribbing her as well. But in doing so she (not me) started this little skirmish. I could demand an apology for that, but that would be silly. But I will not be silenced for responding to Katiebee's taunt. Why should I be?
At no point have I done anything more here than point out to Katiebee that if she harps on other people's grammatical mistakes, she should expect that her mistakes (which certainly exist) will become the subject of discussion as well.
I am not angry, nor have I been angry at any point during this current discussion. But I am not backing down, either, as I feel I'm both in the right, and within my rights. I have nothing against Katiebee (in fact, I find her amusing). But If she seriously wants to be a grammar Nazi on an ongoing basis she should focus more attention of her own writing, because it too is peppered with errors (pretty much like most people's writing is) and she will ultimately sow what she reaps.
