Communism believed that religion was the opiate of the masses, so they sought to destroy all things religious.  Maybe they should have just waited and organized religion, as we know it today, would have just disappeared on its own.  But then what happens when there is no religion?  Something will fill the vacuum and it most likely will not be good.

Communist's saw the church as a potential rival and this is why they attempted to suppress it. In communism there can only be one power, the power of the state to control the minds of the people and in essence this what religion seeks also.
As for the demise of religion, this is unlikely for there will always be humans who seek to have power over others.

Well, capitalism may have its faults, but I would prefer that over communism.  Actually, I was thinking more along the line of the rise of Fundamental Islam that is slowly creeping into Europe.  Their religious rules make Christianity look tame by comparison.

Ummmm, no they don't. Fundamental Islam is on the same level fundamental Christianity was in the Middle Ages with their Spanish Inquisition. And it would seem there are still plenty of Christian nut cases in the US today... There are indeed problems with fundamental muslims in Europe, but I would say any kind of fundamentalists and -ism reverers cause problems...

The rise of fundamentalism among Muslims is growing at a faster pace than it is in the Christian community in the US,  based on the faster population growth of Muslims worldwide.  Christian fundamentalism is mainly confined to the US, whereas the spread of Muslim fundamentalism worldwide has been growing.
