I figure I'm an agnostic. I used to claim atheism, yet when I skydived, I tended to avoid unnecessarily sacrilegious remarks right before jumps, so I guess now I'm agnostic

It's not his statement, originally, but he attested to it's authenticity which means he assumes responsibility for it. It's really the absolute nature of the claim that makes it so stupid, short of asking every single person who has ever been in a foxhole, it could never be verified. And as the above link shows there are scores of them in the US military alone.

It seems to me that any religious faith has to be entered into of one's own freewill, or there's just nothing there. Put bluntly: if you think you need to have the forces of Government behind you to impose your religious agenda, your religion is shit.

I am someone who both believes in God and practices an organized religion.

And I agree with you completely.

Your point helps return a proper focus to the free exercise and anti-establishment clauses of the First Amendment. It protects both of us in our choices to believe or not, and to practice or not.

The problem, as you allude to, is the recent efforts to pervert that protection into a codification, via laws or Supreme Court decisions, or specific religious beliefs, and specific religious practices. That subverts both the the wording and the intent of the First Amendment.
