Richard Dawkins being interviewed before a live audience at Oxford last month, expounding on his views of God, religion, science, and the relationships between them.

It's very long (about 45 minutes), but I found it fascinating:

Oh, that's such a nice irony.

There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

"Religion requires careful thought, not reflexive acceptance. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of God; because, if there be one, he must approve the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear."  -- Thomas Jefferson

Anytime I hear a reference to God, I'm reminded of this scene from Conan the Barbarian.

I consider myself agnostic. I live a good life. I take care of my family, treat everyone fairly and honor my vows. Religion has it place and purpose, and I dont judge people based on their beliefs.

If by some reason God or any other omnipotent being punishes me for not praying, or believing in the wrong deity or not force feeding words written by man. I will say in my best Arnold voice. "The hell with you!"

"The truth is that the greatest enemies of the doctrines of Jesus are those calling themselves the expositors of them, who have perverted them for the structure of a system of fancy absolutely incomprehensible, and without any foundation in his genuine words. And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classified with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with all this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of the most venerated reformer of human creatures."

- Thomas Jefferson

But,... But,... But,... Miss B, Jefferson was one of the Founding Fathers!  He Wanted us to have a Christian government! That's why he wrote the Constitution!

(Yeah, I know he wrote the Declaration of independence and not the Constitution)

this is evidence that at least one of the founding fathers was more about free thinking that about what the populace should believe.

Sometimes I think of all the time wasted in arguing whether there is a God, and not enough time trying to make this earth as close to heaven (you don't have to believe in God to understand what heaven would be like) as we can.

Think of the best you can do for others and yourself...and spend your time and energy in achieving it.

"As the holiest season in the Christian calendar, Easter has become a time of great significance among superstitious people in all Western countries. Easter was originally a pagan festival in praise of the Germanic Goddess of Spring, Ostera, and it is from this more ancient tradition that such customs as the eating of Easter eggs ultimately derive. Timed to coincide with the first Sunday following the full moon of the vernal equinox, Easter is now marked by a host of rituals and customs that combine Christian and pagan elements."

Me?  I'm going to fire up the Barbie and grill up a nice spatchcocked rabbit.   :emot_laughing:

I look at it like this......

If I believe in god, and I'm wrong, I'm out nothing.
If I'm right, I gain eternity in paradise.

If I dont believe in god and I'm right, I gain nothing.
If I'm wrong, I spend eternity in hell.

which bet would you take?

Note, Christians in the West will celebrate Easter this Sunday.  They use the Gregorian Calendar, which was invented about 1,550 years after Jesus was crucified.  The church in the East will celebrate Pascha on May 5th.  They use the Julian Calendar, which was in use at the time of Christ.

If Christians can't even agree on what day to observe the crucifixion, why do they think they can tell you that you are going to burn in a lake of fire and brimstone for eternity?  They can't.

Wow....so not agreeing on a day invalidates a faith's beliefs? Um....ok?
