This is the music for the game that I love to play. It's brooding, deep, and black in mood. I can see the images brought to life in this music. The juggernauts that were the Soviet and German armies clashing in the dust, mud, and ice of the eastern steppes. And the ones being ground into that dust and mud were the soldiers.

Wow, Katie! Those are some splendid selections! I can hardly wait to work my way through them all.

I am a big fan of march music. Off the top of my head, some quick favorites are Schubert's Marche Militaire, the Moana March (Hawaiian, on YouTube played by a string band), Alte Kameraden (many versions on YouTube, fancy performance by Andre Rieu, glorious performance by a German military band along the banks of the Rhine or the Danube, one of those mighty rivers--unfortunately the music tainted by the Hitler experience, but composed long before Hitler made the scene, and still beloved by non-Nazi sympathizers); Le Marseillaise, the French national anthem, which has the most bloodthirsty lyrics of any anthem I know of (not that it did Vichy any good when the blitzkrieg caught them flatfooted with their pants down); Stars & Stripes Forever, which I picked up on my little transistor radio one bright morning when I was descending an alpine meadow, really got me charged up!

I'm gonna give you two woos for this, one here and another somewhere else.

This may be the wrong thread. It may be the right one.

I talked to my Dad today, and asked him to comment on this video. He said it's overly-dramatic, simplistic, and emotionally accurate.

While some people may see my admiration as that of a child for a larger than life father, or the glorification of militarization by someone who has no idea of what it is, I disagree. I have seen my father and my mother count the cost of his service.

My father is not one to glorify something like this, nor was he willing to talk about his experiences while we grew up. Until we were of an age to consider a military career, and then he spared neither himself or us from frank and explicit conversations about a soldiers life. As a result, he convinced at least one of my brothers to not enter military service.

While I hold him as hero, I have no illusions about the cost of going in harm's way.

I want to thank Liz for pointing me to this video. The talks I have with my father over this, his most personal, intense, and life changing experiences, bring me closer to him. And I am very thankful for that.
