I'm only 26 but my daughter thinks I'm ancient.

I had an 18 year old tell me I was old when I was 20.

That is all.

Oh, I've been there...

I recently changed jobs, but at my previous employer I was in a department of 15, and 13 of them* were young enough to be my offspring, with no danger of breaking any age-related laws. Anywhere.

My immediate superior was only 4 years older than my oldest actual son.

I don't think I look old, but when I told a group of early teens that I had tutored Queen Victoria's children in woodcarving, none of them queried the statement...

(*#14 just retired, and #15 was me.)

Oh, and I'm 48.

Trust me, none of them knew who Queen Victoria was.

These are British kids - they know she's at least historical, hell, she's been a character in Doctor Who more than once, and they're doing a period drama of her life on TV now!

I used to work with a lady who was all of 4 days younger than me. And I never let her forget it. Called her a young spring chicken for the entire 12 years we worked together.

That is all.

This forum is the only place online people don't call me Uncle or Uncle-whatever my user name is on that site. Or Oji. I actually don't mind Oji too much.

Gee. I know who Queen Victoria was . And I know the reference to widow's weeds. And I know who Kipling was.

Geez, I even know who King Canute was.

More to the point I know who Edward Longshanks was and why he received the approbation of the Scots.

There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

The state of education (as far) in so much of Science and Math in this country is nothing short of horrible when you have to compare it to countries like Japan who push Science and Math as the most important of subjects. I can remember (when I was a student) they were talking about making school "year round" with something like two weeks off for summer and two weeks off for Christmas. I always wondered why that never happened in this country (It seems to work in Europe and Asia).

Love,
Liz

It has long puzzled me why people insist on comparing our educational system with Japan's when there is very little basis of comparison between the two countries, and between their educational systems.

Japan has one of the most homogeneous populations on the planet. Its citizens -- and, thus, it's students -- are the same in terms of race, ethnicity, national origin, social standing, and economic status.

The U.S., on the other hand, has one of the most heterogeneous populations on the planet, with people from every possible race, ethnicity, national origin, social standing, and economic status.

Add to all of this, Japanese students go through several criterion of selection in being chosen to attend schools.

Thus, if you wanted to make a comparison, compare Japanese students with students in elite U.S. private schools. If you did so, I suspect you'll find a very close match.

Back on topic: I turned 36 in June.
