Maplewood man attacked ex-girlfriend, woman shoots back

Article by: CHAO XIONG , Star Tribune
    Updated: January 22, 2015 - 9:50 PM

Ex-girlfriend, who shot him in the chest and called 911, won’t be charged.

A Maplewood man was shot in the chest by his ex-girlfriend Sunday night as he attacked her in her Mounds View home, according to charges filed Thursday in Ramsey County District Court.

Daniel A. Carlson, 45, who survived the shooting, was charged with making terroristic threats and domestic assault.

The 29-year-old woman was not charged.

Carlson allegedly entered the woman’s home about 11:48 p.m. Sunday without her consent, attacked and threatened to kill her before being shot. He then wrested the gun away from the woman, according to the charges.

“After Carlson got her gun, Carlson went to her refrigerator and took out a beer,” the charges stated.

According to the complaint:

Carlson had previously rented a room in the woman’s basement, and the two started a romantic relationship. But in early January, the woman had asked him to move out and took his house key.

Sunday, she heard knocking and saw Carlson at her door. Fearful for her safety, the woman retrieved her loaded handgun, sat on her couch and repeatedly told Carlson to leave.

Carlson demanded to talk to her, and then entered the house. He climbed on top of her and hit her in the head several times.

“How could you do this to me? I just wanted some answers!” Carlson said, according to the woman, who described him as looking “wild-eyed.”

Carlson allegedly threatened to kill her. Afraid for her life, she pulled out the gun, pressed the barrel against his right chest and fired once.

“Although he was shot through his chest, Carlson continued hitting her and then struggled to rip the gun from [the woman’s] hand,” the complaint said.

“She managed to remove the ammunition magazine from the gun just before Carlson grabbed it away from her.”

That’s when Carlson went to the refrigerator and grabbed a beer, the charges said.

The woman fled outside. Carlson chased her and collapsed in the driveway. The woman returned to the house and called 911.

“From inside, she saw Carlson put her gun to his own head and pull the trigger, but the gun was not loaded and did not fire,” the complaint said.

When officers arrived at the scene, Carlson was sitting on the woman’s front step. He allegedly told police that he was guilty and said, “Don’t blame her, I was just trying to get answers.”

A can of beer, half empty, sat next to a gun in the yard.

Carlson had a bullet entrance wound in his right chest and an exit wound on the right side of his back. He is expected to survive.

He was charged via arrest warrant and is not in custody.

Glad she wasn't hurt. Hopefully they put the turd away.

While you're waiting in vain for that apology, why don't you make yourself useful by getting on your knees and opening your mouth

She should have called 911, when he wouldn't leave.

Sure, and then she could request a copy of the police report to have if she survived this time, and ask for a restraining order, assuming he may honor such an order. She did the right thing, maybe next time aim for the left side of his chest would work more effectively.

Slowed him down I bet...

Joan, a 911 call would have gotten the police there a lot sooner. Think. Just sit and think.

I do agree that a call would have been appropriate.  However, I also think she should have shot him as he came through the door.  Why let some bastard hit on you, and possibly kill you, before you decide to defend yourself?

That's what the 911 call would do. Set you up for a legal shoot.

Be on the phone to 911 in fear of your life, have the recording hear you clearly telling them to go away, not to come in, etc. Door gets kicked in, you shoot and you keep shooting until the threat stops.

The trouble with reality is the lack of background music!

Center mass, baby, until the threat ends... then reload...

Cash store worker shoots
alleged robber, suspect dies

HOUSTON - A store manager refused to be a victim when a robber put a gun to the back of his head on Houston's east side Thursday morning. The manager turned around and shot him. The attempted robber later died at the hospital.

Still, neighbors are saying the manager did what he had to do to protect himself.

Bullet casings littered the ground, between a pair of sneakers, pants and a gun, all belonging to the guy who tried to hold up the store manager at gunpoint, while he was holding what looked like a money bag, but was actually just his medication.

"These guys, they just want to take what you have. Shouldn't be like that," said another nearby business owner.

But the manager turned the tables, pulling out his own gun and shooting the attempted robber several times instead.

"Good guys win," said neighbor Monica Conseco.

One stray bullet made it all the way across the street and through the front of an auto repair shop, skimming a car inside. Luckily no one was there yet, and no one passing by was hurt.

The auto shop owner doesn't blame the manager for shooting his business, saying you have to defend yourself with whatever you have.

In fact all the business owners at the corner of Sgt. Macario Garcia and Ave. Q watch out for each other, and they all say they pack heat, for days just like this.

"Unfortunately that's the way it is," said Luis Ruiz, owner of the check cash business where the hold-up happened. He says his manager is very upset, but did what he had to do to defend himself, and in the surrounding neighborhood, you won't find anyone second-guessing him.

"Look what it's going to end up for you, either shot, buried, or in jail. You pick your choice," said neighbor Adam Cano.

Witnesses say another guy took off in a black car with temporary, paper plates. They're hoping surveillance video will help track down that second accomplice.
