Provided Michael Sam passes his physical, he will be signed to the Practice Squad with the Dallas Cowboys, per NFL.com tonight.

Michael Sam will bring his talent, and his unique status with him, and is sure to be valued on his new team. After all, he may well be the only NFL player in Dallas without an arrest record. Indeed he is unique!

  Go Michael!

I cannot, out of ignorance, comment on the football aspects. I know very little about professional football (except for "Go Bears!"), and I've never even heard of a practice squad.

But I feel very comfortable asserting that never before in the history of the NFL has one of the last players chosen in the draft received so much attention. In fact, other than Johnny Manziel (and I had to look that up), Michael Sam has received more attention than all other 2014 draftees combined.

The reason, of course, is obvious. But an impossibly heavy burden has been placed on Michael Sam's shoulders, and I truly feel for the guy. The media (both sports and mainstream media), the general sports fan-base, and GLBTW advocates have put him in a near impossible position. I can only imagine how much stress he's under right now.

Here's the point: True equality will never exist until everyone stops viewing players -- and actors, and musicians, and anyone else for that matter -- in terms of their sexual orientation, and starts viewing them exclusively as people. Celebrating Michael Sam's sexuality makes about as much sense as celebrating Peyton Manning's sexuality.

Players know when a coach chooses another player to play over a better talented player. In their eyes, their faith in that coach diminishes.  Sam was cut from the Rams because he was not as talented as other linemen at his position.  The Cowboys are weak on defense so maybe they think Sam can help them.

"Whatever."

The cowboys picked him up for one of two reasons.... (1) As Watcher mentions, the Cowboys D needs help, or (2) Jerry Jones is an attention seeking whore.   Probably a bit of each was factored in.   I hope the kid can prove he belongs under all the pressure.

Joe, I was going to add what you said about Jones but figured most who follow American football already knew this.  Heard he is still fuming about not being able to get Johnny Manziel for QB, but was talked out of it by his son after they resigned Romo to a long term and expensive contract.

Yes, after spending his time with Dallas on the practice squad.  Shame that he was not thought of as just a so-so football player rather then a gay football player.

I really haven't followed this story. Did Dallas think of him as a gay football player or just a so-so player?

Don't know.  Jerry Jones might have signed him to make points but since the NFL is a big business, I would think they signed him in hopes he could improve their team.
