Two people have praised me for the attention to detail (including the OP), and it's racked up ten upvotes as of writing. That made me pretty chuffed, considering it's a small, easy-to-miss but significant detail in terms of dating something.

Upvotes feel really good. Usually I just get a few, but occasionally you get that post/comment that goes viral and you pick up 1,000+. Those are the ones you remember. 3 years and 16,975 karma points.

Okay, short story.

Browsing r/AustralianNostalgia, someone put up a pic of a 1.5L Coke bottle, asking if someone would give it an approximate date. Everyone noted the "Always Summer" logo device on the side, which puts around early to mid 90's. Me, on the other hand, spotted the phone number on the bottom of the label, which used a (008) prefix, which got replaced by the current 1800 prefix back in the early 90s (I think '93/'94 was when they did the switch). So I stated as much on the post.

I'll admit I had to Google the meaning of "chuffed." It sounded negative to me, but I was wrong: It means very pleased.

And you should be very pleased. I love posts that point out tiny but significant details.

Just came by to check in. Yay! I really think we need to hire an IT professional to look in to this 503 problem. I don’t know if the site has been hacked, or if there is a new Internet protocol we need to implement. But this started a few months ago, and it’s only gotten worse over time. I’d be willing to contribute some money to that effort. And I’m sure some of you would also.

I've about worn out my link to this site checking to see if it's back yet. I was ready to see another 503, when BAM, there we were. I so miss all of you when this happens. I don't look at much porn anymore. Not any point with my treatment.

Looking at some explanations, the most common reasons for 503 errors are technical issues, server maintenance, or even Denial of Service attacks. Basically, the web browser is sending a request to the server, but the request isn't reaching the server for one reason or another.

Looking at some explanations, the most common reasons for 503 errors are technical issues, server maintenance, or even Denial of Service attacks. Basically, the web browser is sending a request to the server, but the request isn't reaching the server for one reason or another.

From the web:

When met with an HTTP error 503, the first question is usually “why?”, coupled with the hope that determining the cause of the issue will help us solve it quickly and painlessly. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

Similar to other HTTP errors, determining the root cause of the Error 503 is much harder than one would expect – especially without technical IT expertise. However, there are a few possible scenarios that can be considered as plausible causes for an HTTP error 503.

In the majority of cases, the 503 is triggered when the website in question is no longer able to connect with its supported server, meaning that any information requested or issued by your browser is simply hitting a wall. This usually happens when the server experiences a technical issue, is undergoing maintenance works, or is facing some sort of malicious disruption, such as a denial of service (DDoS) attack. Regardless of the cause, this information will likely not be readily available.

Frequent technical issues, such as those occurring multiple times a month, can be especially disruptive and excessive downtime can cause serious financial difficulty – especially if it heavily depends on online traffic or orders made through e-commerce. Perhaps the best example of this is Amazon's Prime Day disruption in 2018, which should serve as a blueprint for businesses in how not to handle an outage.

Hence, if your website is displaying an HTTP error 503 more often than its own home page, it might be worth switching hosting providers.

Although an HTTP error 503 can diminish the number of customers visiting the site, it can also be caused by an inundation of visitors, such as during seasonal sales. In these cases, the server remains connected, yet is incapable of supporting the avalanche of requests from many different users.

Alternatively, this can also be caused by malicious traffic instead of eager customers, such as in the case of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. Misconfigured web apps may also cause a 503 error to appear, such as a plugin conflict caused by WordPress, while regular 503 errors could suggest an issue with the domain name system (DNS), whether that's an incorrect server configuration or an issue with the DNS server itself.

However, if the 503 error is a result of a problem found on the server's side, then unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do yourself to remedy it. This is where the IT administrator for the site should troubleshoot the issue to find a solution to the fault that users are reporting if they are encountering HTTP 503 errors. If you find yourself in that position and discover that updates need to be applied to a site, it's recommended to schedule them when your site's traffic is likely to be lowest, so your users don't regularly come across errors.

Alternatively, if recurring HTTP 503 errors are regularly caused by traffic spikes, it's best to use this as a sign that you might want to increase your web server resources investment. In addition to this, a surge of traffic could be the result of a denial of service (DoS) attack, in which case it might be a clever idea to approach your hosting provider to ask about the possible mitigations they can offer you to prevent attacks in the future.

Further investing in security protections or increasing the frequency of patch management could also serve to prevent any subsequent incidents from occurring. Several providers already include DDoS protection as part of their default packages, which may restrict the number of users that are allowed to access a site at any one time.

Finally, should the HTTP 503 error be a result of a programming bug, you'll need to undergo further investigation to pinpoint the issue and rectify it permanently.

I wonder if it could even be the forum software itself? Because I always was able to connect to the front page with the Enter and Leave options just fine. It's just when I tried to get to the forum part itself that I'd get the 503.

Well it’s not consistent. It seems to affect some users more than others. So I am thinking it is a software bug in the forum platform. Not because I’m some IT guru, but if it was a server issue or a traffic issue, it would affect everyone the same way. And I primarily get 503’s with media files. I can post links [url] all day long. But the minute I post media code [img] (jpg, gif, mp4, etc.), I get 503. So that’s forum software, in my opinion.

I think it's different issues at play.  The image 503 is a different problem than the server 503 that kept us down for a couple days.  That's my guess, anyway.  Most likely culprit on the image stuff is timeouts while the site... I'm willing to look at some logs if available.  I'm an IT guy at my core.

I took got 503 AFTER actually getting past the enter / leave screen when I tried to post a GIF with my first post back.

The GIF was off of a bing search, which had not been a problem before.  After going to the actual website hosting the GIF and adding it that way, it worked fine.

I'm letting you know because the more info on when and how this is happening could help pinning down the cause.

WOO! to Lt broccoli for offering his assistance.  Thanks.

Both my high school and my childrens’ high school football teams won their state semi-final games over the weekend.  They are both advancing to the state championship game for their divisions this weekend. Lots of excitement. Championship week in Texas. 12 Divisions all together. All played at Jerryworld, AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Televised on Bally Network.

Took my son to the law firm Christmas party tonight. He walked in like he owned the place, and had the office eating out of his hands. So proud. The food was phenomenal and the drinks were all top shelf. On the way home he said, “the women there all seem to like you.”  I’ve still got it.

Made it across the river for breakfast at our favorite restaurant. It's one of those places with a lot of regulars.
Got a friendly greeting from several and the owner came by and talked with us awhile. Her daughter was our waitress and automatically brought coffee and water. She told us what our order would.be and mailed it. (Yes we're creatures of habit)
Took home a slice of out of this world chocolate cake and a gift certificate for our neighbor's Christmas Card. You know, the ones who mow our lawn and shovel our sidewalk. Have I mentioned here that we have great neighbors? :D
Anyway great day starter.
