Winter solstice 2020 in Northern Hemisphere was at 5:02 AM ET

From now until June 20, more daylight each day.  Yay!   

Thank god, I hate that it seems like midnight at 7pm every evening.

My I humbly remind everyone that it's my birthday when the days start to get longer. Just my little gift to the world. Gads...I wonder what the world was like 75 years ago. :emot_laughing:

I finished my packing.  I'm all set to get out of here and on to warmer weather.  Flight leaves on Wednesday morning.

Speaking of the winter solstice and little gifts to the world, that's why Christmas is celebrated on December 25th.

The Gospels make no mentioned of the date of Jesus's birth, but there is a single hint in Luke's gospel that indicates it was likely around March 1, the time when the new lambs are born.

Meanwhile, there were two pre-Christian pagan festivals that were celebrated around December 25th -- the first day after the winter solstice when it became noticeably longer again, and the sun wasn't fading away forever. These feasts -- Sol Invictus (the all-conquering Sun) and Saturnalia, dedicated to the god Saturn, included elements that would be included in Christmas celebrations, including the exchanging of gifts and gathering to hold family meals.

In the early fifth century, the date on which Christmas was celebrated was set as December 25th, to coincide with these preexisting celebrations. And the liturgical calendar was adjusted according. Thus, the Feast of the Annunciation, when Jesus was conceived in Mary's womb, is celebrated exactly nine months before Christmas, on March 25. And, since at the time of the Annunciation the angel told Mary that her cousin Elizabeth was six months pregnant, the Feast of John the Baptist is celebrated on June 25th.

So, Happy Solstice, Sol Invictus, Saturnalia, and, eventually, Christmas!

Miss B teaches us so much.

I remember also that pagen traditions we're adapted for Christmas. The yule log was burned to bring light back to the dark world. Also for trees were brought into the home as a reminder that spring would return, turning the world green.

It all depends on what you believe, but majority of our beliefs originate from the old Germanic or Anglo-Saxon religions.

Yule logs, yule block, yule trees, and even yule singers all adapted into Christmas traditions.

You are correct about the yule log being a ceremonial log burnt in celebrating surviving the harse environment and being able to witness the rebirth of the world.  The yule tree is also a place to hang memorials for lost souls, ie Christmas ornaments, and it is usually placed on a symbolic cloth tree skirt,  that represents the sun and life giving power.   Also wreaths are made from removed branches which also represents the sun

Origins and specific practices vary greatly in interpretation.

At Burning Man every year, a huge elaborate temple is built from scratch on the playa. Practically everyone in Black Rock City visits the temple one or more times during the week. The temple is filled with messages to and about lost love ones. Many messages are about the dead: lives cut short, lives well lived, or lives roughly lived. But the messages could be about anything: a dead pet, a dead relationship, anything. Nope, you're spot on. There's a long list of modern-day Christmas traditions that are of pagan origin, including Christmas trees and wreaths, yule logs, mistletoe, holly, and even egg nog! (Though if you spike your egg nog with Jack Daniels, that was made y good Christians in Lynchburg, TN, which is in a dry county.)

To my mind, their origins are irrelevant, and their pagan origins don't matter. They're all become part of the celebration. Nor do I see any conflict between the secular and religious celebrations of Christmas. My local parish has Christmas trees, wreaths, and many boughs of holly. And it's all good.

It was the last day of school before Christmas break. Our grandson,  who is in second grade, was emptying out his book bag and along with his books and papers were Christmas cards from some of his classmates. I happened to read two of them, both from girls and both saying how much my grandson makes their days so much fun and how he makes them laugh.  Grandpa is proud. A chip off the old block.

Watching the morning news, they showed a home totally overdone with Christmas Decorations and lights. They may be able to see it from space.

Next door, the neighbor had a sign on his house with an arrow pointing to the overlord house next door.

The sign simply said, "Ditto".

Snowblower started! First time is always iffy. I'm bad about burning out the gas in the tank when winter is over. Still had a tankful in my gas can too. So old gas in, primed and hit the electric start. Got one cough and on second attempt, ROAR!!!

Only 4-5 inches of snow but wind created white out conditions. Did my walks and took care of the front walks for two neighbors.

I remember how excited I got as a kid. Grabbing my sled after the first snow and hiking to the big hill in the pasture. Wheeeeee!
Now it's, *&+#*#&*, etc.

What a difference 65 or 70 years can make  :emot_laughing:
