I agree with Kurt Vonnegut that all music is sacred. I am tempted to qualify certain products of the recording industry as 'not music', but it makes me feel like the Catholic church at the height of its despotism, or Islam after a hundred years when the concept of takfir (heretic) was first introduced.
If it is morally wrong to kill a Christian or a Muslim, and you want to anyway, you excommunicate them, declare them heretics and non-Christians or non-Muslims. This tactic was used heavily against Protestants and is still used against Muslims who refuse Sharia law.
I realize I am dramatizing this a bit, but the logic is essentially the same. If I say all music is sacred, then label some music as 'horrible' or 'shitty', aren't I essentially saying 'this is not music'? Of course it's music, it's just bad music. "Some music is sacred" doesn't have the same poetic ring to it, though, does it?
I don't like Coldplay, John Mayer (post Squares), Ashley Simpson, My Chemical Romance, Miley Cyrus, The Shins (post Shutes too Narrow), Modest Mouse (pre good News), or Bright Eyes (post I'm Wide Awake).
That being said, I will gladly listen to the above artists with someone else who loves them, and enjoy doing so. Because I think that's what is sacred; the joy of listening. If what you like evokes that joy in you, even if it does nothing for me, then the axiom 'All music is sacred' holds true. Thanks Kurt. We miss you.
