Where I grew up it wasn't uncommon to have 3 corners of an intersection with a gas station. They frequently had "Gas Wars" trying to draw in customers. The lowest price I remember was 11.9¢ per gallon. Normal price at the time was closer to 20¢ a gallon.
That's two gallons for a quarter with a penny change. I could make two gallons last almost a week (except on Friday and Saturday nights).
There was a mom-and-pop drive up place that sold hamburgers (really good hamburgers), 5 for $1. When McDonald's first came to town, I bought many a Big Mac and milkshake combo for 50¢. Sometimes I didn't even have to pay anything, if my brother was working.
(A Dairy Queen milkshake is now 6-bucks, but I'll need to switch to the Random Rant thread to talk about that.)
