…For the last 12 years, I like to stack rocks at places I go…
…I always do 5 rocks…
Interesting! I first discovered this practice during a holiday on the Isle of Skye in 2010. I was away from the car, taking photographs, when a local mentioned to my wife that there was something else of interest just along the coast from where we were parked. I duly walked to some rock outcrops and found these piles constructed of five rocks, or thereabouts…
We mentioned them to our hosts later in the day. They had no idea what these constructions were supposed to represent. We found others near the Falls of Measach in the Corrieshalloch Gorge, near Ullapool; which were shorter piles of smooth stones.
What is the inspiration for making these constructions?
It started as a Zen thing. As for myself, I did it because I thought it was fun, cool and looked pretty.
I find the flattest rocks. I've seen some stacked tall like that in your picture, but it never appealed to me.
5 is my favorite number, that's why I do 5. No idea why all those in the picture have 5. No correlation between mine and that.
At home in my old garden they were all different heights and numbers of stone.
When I do it out in the world. I always do 5. It is not easily noticeable, doesn't take away from the scenery. But then when someone does notice it, it's like a little cool discovery they have just made. A little bit of nature art if you will.
