Wasn't sure exactly where to ask this but this seems a good spot. I have no doubt if I'm wrong this sentence can be edited out and the post moved by a mod. :)

When it comes to stories and trying to keep them not only realistic but socially acceptable, how young is too young for the characters to be involved? How much older is socially acceptable of their partner/s?  It was a decade ago the last time I had the official stats from the area I worked in which the average age of a girl losing her virginity was 12-15 and the average age of the guy taking it 22-27.  (no, not kidding).  While those were what was being reported in reality a great many people find that hard to believe and would label such things as 'sick and perverted'.  I tend to keep my characters around 15-17 for the girl and 20-22 for the guy which seems to me to be realistic even if it is technically illegal.

What are your thoughts on appropriate ages for a 'realistic' story? Yes, I'm aware we have a few people that think grandpa and the 4 year old seem perfectly normal but I'm not looking for the extremes nor to come across as the next pedobear. Honest feedback is welcome. :)

The trouble with reality is the lack of background music!

I think 14 for either gender is appropriate. As far as the upper ages? Probably anything under 50. If you are looking for something than can seem closer to normality.

My two cents.

I don't think the age differnce is an issue to me. If it gets too wide i add Pedo to my Story Code.
I'd say most of my adult characters tend to be in there thirties to forties, though i have at times had some characters older like grandmothers and grandfathers [though i don't write many stories featuring a grandparent].
The underage characters tend to be twelve to sixteen i'd say, though i have written a very few stories with characters younger than twelve.

I thing your 14 is a good age. ALSO, any stories featuring underage must be posted as fiction with the disclaimer added

Don't worry, Eric, I do list the odd disclaimer. I might make it a bit more realistic like "I promise this has nothing to do with your innocent 16 year old daughter who would never sneak out the window to meet me in the middle of the night and sneak back in just before you get up for work so don't worry" or something along those lines. Not that such things ever happened. Honest!  ;)

I figure I try to keep them within 4-7 years age difference. After that it gets... yeah, I'm not pedobear.

Hi. This is my first post here, just discovered the site, but I've been a contributer to  "Literotica.com" for years and have published several stories there.  Unfortunately, they have a limitation of "18" as an age for characters in stories having sex which is unrealistic and requires a lot of working around and re-wording to discuss sex among people of high school age.  Somehow you have to say vague things like, "When I was young" or "When I was in school" (not saying high school and perhaps implying college).  This has been a point of contention for me because I once got gigged for even mentioning a "mom" realizing her teenage son was masturbating by "finding his crusty underpants in the hamper".

I'm not pushing pedophilia, but the facts of life are that kids in their early teens either have intercourse, oral sex, or at least masturbate and that making some silly rule to not talk about it sort of violates a premise that a website is a "free and open forum".

Common sense applies, but unfortunately, using the cliche, common sense isn't all that common.

A dirty mind is a wonderful thing to share.

Ditto. I even prefer it to be a 15-year old or at least a 14-year-old who's nearing 15. I can't fantasize about a teen as a consenting sexual being below that age, probably because I never viewed/experienced myself as a sexual being before I was 14.

Personally, I'm more towards 16 or older but I won't judge others for their thoughts.

As for the age of consent, law is law. We all have to accept that. We are as accepting as we can be while working with what is legal.

I have a slightly different take on this... stories are just that... stories.

That said, I base my own plot lines on my personal experience. My own sexual adventures began very early with my best friend. I have spoken of her a few times here. A year later, I touched my first penis...

If you read my stuff, you get a clear idea of my opinions of emerging sexual identity. Several of my main characters are tweens, so yah... I go younger in my stories, but never below twelve. I believe younger children are forced, and I don't write those types of stories.

So my typical 15-16 is socially acceptable and (at least from what I have seen/experienced) is about the most realistic as well. At that point they tend to have a pretty good idea what is going on and the curiosity to pursue it.

Remember, only a few decades ago girls were married off by 14-15 and if they didn't have a kid by 16 there was something wrong... Now days that's just Walmart.

I have enjoyed the odd story where young kids play with other young kids, exploring and learning together.  But anything younger than 15-16 with adults involved starts to stretch the limits of erotica for me.

I would agree with Gia...fantasies are fantasies, but you gotta be able to relate, and don't know many that can relate to an 8 yr old having sex.  Early teens tho...they're active in reality, so stories about such are definitely realistic (or could be...).

Stories are stories, fantasies are fantasies...

but if they (the characters) haven't had a chance to learn long division, I'll think you're depraved :emot_laughing:

Does that mean if I can't do long division I can't have sex?  ;D

Have you ever had a chance to learn? most kids in most countries get that around age 9-10. I never stipulated that the lessons had to stick

My personal opinion:

There are some teen 15 year old girls  are totally "hot" .....
..... there are NO "hot" 5 year  old girls out there.

I grant you that, some are very pretty little girls, but they are "hot" 5 y/o girls

It is the inevitable nature of man, to desire that - which he can not have

I think it depends more on the character than a firm number.  For example there are 16 year olds that are far too immature to handle anything sexual, yet there are 14 year olds that are advanced for their age and can handle making certain decisions for themselves.  I think the same thing applies in storytelling.

Holy Threadsurection Fatman! Err...

I agree on the no "hot" 5 year old bit. Triply so when it's granddad, etc. Anything 12 and under really pushes the boundaries even of my vivid imagination.  I tend to notice the writing quality on those plummets right along with the ages. Is there a correlation? Maybe. But for whatever reason the moment I start reading 8 year old with anyone it's closed screen, next. Does it happen? Yes. Are those kids generally scarred for life? Yep. Have I seen the aftermath? Oh too many times.   I guess I just prefer a more realistic story that I can relate to and my imagination can get into.

As for the long division you do know that sex is all about math, right?

Add two people
Subtract the clothes
Divide the legs
and Multiply!

Quite agreed. It would be nice if I didn't run across so many 14-18 year olds more mature than most 35-45 year olds. One need only visit a Walmart or similar to see examples daily.

Not sure if it works but I try not to always pin down the exact age of the characters in a story.  That way the reader can decide if its a 10 year old or a 13 year old.

Realistic wise I think if the youthful partner is interested in sex they will be from 12 up. If its more of a persuasive or forced situation they can be younger.

I usually picture them from 12 up. My wife usually seems them younger still.
