Friday, I received a "happy Thanksgiving" note from my Japanese customer. LoL. Now I know, he must be following GRM's posts on KB.

(Cam I get a grammatical score on this post? It took me 2 minutes to type it out on my phone.)

Ah... the full stop went over my head, what is a full stop is?

I am guessing a little embarrassment would give the old guy some color. You know, the English and their prison pallor....just saying... 8)

He's probably referring to the camel.

Nah.  The camel had a nice color. You kind of blended in with the sand dunes.  8)

There's a difference between grammar, usage, and spelling mistakes, and simple typos, to which we're all susceptible -- especially those pecking away on microscopic keys or touchscreens.

"Full stop" is the British equivalent of "period," indicating the end of a sentence or statement. I wasted about 20 minutes on Google yesterday trying to discover the origins of both the American and British expressions, but to no avail.

Thanksgiving is the one Holiday that I hate to celebrate.  All day people flapping their jaws about being grateful and families.  Yeah, why don't you ask all those Indians, who fed your ass and kept you alive how much they like Thanksgiving?

True, TD.  Sad, but true.  The early settlers never knew how to ask.  They just took. And when they couldn't take what they wanted, they either slaughtered the Indian or forced them onto reservations, usually in areas unsuitable for human habitation.

I disagree. Though the "first thanksgiving" had definite religious motives, today's celebrations need not have any at all. And, best of all, there's none of the hyper-commercialization and stress-filled gift-giving and gift-receiving that mars the celebration of Christmas.

I can understand how someone with a less-than-happy family can find this celebration stressful and contentious, but it's a chance to come together, try to understand and get along with each other, and mend whatever differences we might have with our families and relatives.

I love Thanksgiving, chiefly because it's a chance for everyone to be grateful, for whatever they chose to be grateful for. We all have something to be grateful for, and recognizing and expressing that gratitude, even if only to ourselves, makes us better people and more fully human.

Barb,

Do you also disagree about the Indian part of TD's statement?  Or not mentioning it means a tacit agreement?

B.....I am so sorry.  It's just that it's plumb pitiful that a National Holiday is declared to remind folks to be grateful.

Thanksgiving is Macy's Day Parade, and belching guys watching football, and hearing all the women fussin' in the kitchin getting food on the table, hearing all the kids asking in their whiney voice, "when are we gonna eat, I'm  hungry?"  Is waiting for whoever's saying the blessing to hurry up.  Thanksgiving should be everyday.

My apologies to the board for steering away from OP.

That was when they were English and before they became the new Americans. No one actually knows how many real Americans died after the invasions from Europe, but we are certainly talking more than a hundred thousand. In the 19th century the New Americans invented the equivalent of concentration camps, bigger, but not much more food. The genocide of the native population of North America was one of the most ruthless in history.

Puhleeze...

it's not like it's the first or worst act of genocide to claim territory that's ever happened.  Nearly all of the Indians survived; they were just (forcibly) moved to the reservations (aka: worthless tracts of land that nobody wanted.)  Most of the ones that were killed were from our early attempts at biological warfare.  We distributed warm wool blankets that people with smallpox had slept in.  The Indians didn't have any resistance to it, and it killed thousands.

Ask the Japanese about their 'Ainu'.  The only remnants of the aboriginal Japanese are in a tiny enclave on the north island.  They killed off the rest of 'em.

Remember the Golden Rule: you do me, and I\'ll do you (paraphrased)

RF - you forgot to mention Hitler's sick plan to rid the world of impure races.   I bet throughout history, almost every country has a piece of sordid history related to "ethnic cleansing" attached to it.

Just because others have committed similar atrocities does not excuse or justify those committed by your previous generations.

I agree, but what is still happening is that one ethnic group that has been in power and tried to stay in power by eliminating their opposition, when they finally lose that power, are then retaliated against by the people they tried to subjugate.  It seems it is an ongoing circle of genocide.
