Nearly 100 people shot in
Chicago in less than a week

by: Alexandra Chachkevitch
Chicago Tribune

Nearly 100 people have been shot in Chicago in less than a week, pushing the number of shooting victims so far this year to more than 2,500 — about 800 more than this time last year, according to data kept by the Tribune.

Between last Friday afternoon and early Thursday, at least 99 people were shot in the city, 24 of them fatally.  At least nine people were killed on Monday alone, the deadliest day in Chicago in 13 years, according to Tribune data. Among the wounded that day was a 10-year-old boy shot in the back as he played on his front porch in Lawndale.

The number of shooting victims in Chicago stood at 2,514 Thursday morning. At this time last year, 1,725 people had been shot.  The city has not seen this level of gun violence since the 1990s, a trend the Police Department has blamed on lax gun laws and feuding gang factions.

Over eight hours from Wednesday evening through early Thursday, three people were killed and at least 10 others were wounded in the city.

A 45-year-old man was killed and two others were wounded when someone walked up to their van in the Gresham neighborhood around 1:55 a.m. Thursday, yelled "Hey" and started shooting, police said.

The three — two men and a woman — had been stopped at a stop sign in the 8000 block of South Marshfield Avenue when the gunman opened fire, police said.  The van took off, made a left turn on 78th Street and stopped, police said.

The 45-year-old man was shot in the back and forearm. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and was pronounced dead, police said.

The other man was shot in the right forearm and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. The woman was struck in the hip and back. She was also taken to Stroger, where her condition was stabilized, police said.

About 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, a 22-year-old man died after being shot in the head in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired and found Stephan Triplett lying on the parkway in the 12400 block of South Lowe Avenue, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Triplett, who also spelled his Stephon in some public records, lived two blocks away in the 12400 block of South Emerald Avenue, the office said.

The third fatal shooting occurred around the same time, at 10 p.m., in the Near West Side neighborhood, police said.

A 22-year-old woman was in a car traveling west on Adams Street near Oakley Avenue when a black Hyundai sedan pulled up and someone got out and fired shots, police said. The gunman ran away as the Hyundai sped away, police said.

The woman was hit twice in the chest. She was driven to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

She was identified as Jamie Williams, of the 10600 block of South LaSalle Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. She was pronounced dead at 10:19 p.m. after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest, the office determined following an autopsy Thursday.

Other shootings:

• Around 4 a.m. Thursday, a 31-year-old man was wounded in the 5200 block of West Quincy Street in the Austin neighborhood, police said.  The man was shot in the lower back, and he was taken in fair condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

• Around 12:20 a.m., a 34-year-old man was critically wounded in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, police said.  The man was shot five times in the 4200 block of West Grenshaw Street. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.

• About 11 p.m. Wednesday, a 27-year-old man was wounded in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.  The man was in the 7200 block of South Artesian Avenue when he was shot in the right foot. He was taken to a hospital but his condition was not known.

• About 10 p.m., a 20-year-old woman was wounded in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.  The woman was in the 9600 block of South Wentworth Avenue when she was shot in the right foot. She was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where she was listed in good condition, police said. Police said the woman was being uncooperative.

• About 9:20 p.m., a 24-year-old man was grazed in the South Chicago neighborhood on the South Side, police said.  The man was walking in the 2400 block of East 82nd Street when someone sitting on a park bench took out a gun and fired, police said. The man was grazed and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition, police said.

• Paramedics were called to the 5600 block of South Wolcott Avenue about 8:55 p.m. and found two shooting victims, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Jeff Lyle.  One person was shot in the arm, the other was shot in the leg, Lyle said.

One of them was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, and an ambulance remained to treat the other person, Lyle said.

• About 8:25 p.m. on the Far South Side, a 32-year-old man was shot in the back in the 700 block of East 105th Place in the Roseland neighborhood, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman.

The man went to Roseland Community Hospital, Sweeney said.

No 'good gal/guy with a gun' was involved in any of this fiasco... just the usual suspects, the expected criminal element, well known to Chicago Police...

YW, Lois, and as you know, Chicago has 100% 'gun control'. Legal purchase is banned, has been for years. So who has the guns? Criminals have the guns.

Yes, but logic dictates we must punish the law abiding owners instead.

Logic in current day America that is. Which is magnificently fucked.

Chicago does not have 100% gun control, nor does anywhere else in the USA.  Remember what happened when DC tried to ban all handguns?  It was ruled unconstitutional.  Besides, even if Chicago tried to ban all gun sales, all you have to do is drive to a suburb.

Proper gun control both keeps guns out of the hands of criminals (properly stored guns are far less likely to be stolen), and prevents law-abiding citizens from [accidentally] becoming criminals.

Intuitively there are arguments for gun control, yet coming from Canada I have seen first hand how gun control measures tend to creep towards gun eradication measures. Now assuming in the US gun control advocates see gun control as an end rather than a means to an end as they did in Canada I am not sure how effective storage laws can be on their own.

Sure if a child is harmed by a loaded firearm that is not properly stored then yes charges can be laid, but what about theft of improperly stored firearms? If a person failed to store his/her guns and the house gets broken into, is he or she going to say to the cops that several guns were stolen so the cops can then charge for improper storage? Of course not. The person will simply not mention the stolen guns. The only way the cops would be able to charge the person with improper storage is if they are aware that the person owns guns, exactly how many guns that person owns and what guns that person owns. The only way to accomplish that is to have people register all firearms. Are you for a comprehensive gun registry which requires all gun owners to report to the government a detailed list of every single gun they own?

I'm not saying I'm necessarily against gun control, as a matter of fact I'm sure many gun owners would be OK with reasonable gun control measures, but from my experience up here I've become wary of the long term intentions of those who promote it.

While you're waiting in vain for that apology, why don't you make yourself useful by getting on your knees and opening your mouth

Is there one more LAW Chicago could enforce to make gun control effective? This ALL Democrat, ALL the time city. Barack's first job city? Where his Pastor lives, who married him and Michelle, and baptized his children, that city?

Just one? Surely you could think of one more law against guns, Lois...

Maybe three?

Maybe One Hundred and Three?

Criminals are criminals.

Actually, Joan, as the anti-Christ, Obama is responsible for everything bad that happens everywhere, not just Chicago. Also, he's black.

If not for Obama, we'd all live together in the perpetual sunshine, and everyone would be rich (and white).

Go Trump.

Scroll back to your earlier posts in this thread where, in 2013-16, you blame the sitting president for the murders and violence Chicago.

It's now 2017, so I assume, being consistent and all, you blame the sitting president for the murders and violence Chicago. Right? Right?

Father's Day brings the 300th Murder in 2017, same as in 2016, and now one can track the shootings and murders by neighborhood in Chicago, for those keeping score, in this Gun Free Zone.

No CCW Permit Holders responsible for shootings or murders so far in 2017.
Police activities are not included in the 'shootings' and 'murder' criminal count.

So many Democrat voters and potential voters lost annually, so sad...

All the shootings and murders tracked are perpetrated by unlicensed weapon holders among the general citizenry in Chicago, such as it is.

Just like you would expect, the states with the highest firearms deaths per capita are all red states (in fairness, New Mexico is really purple). Do you live in one of these, Joan?

– FACT: Despite making up just 13% of the population, blacks commit around half of homicides in the United States. DOJ statistics show that between 1980 and 2008, blacks committed 52% of homicides, compared to 45% of homicides committed by whites.

More up to date FBI statistics tell a similar story. In 2013, black criminals carried out 38% of murders, compared to 31.1% for whites, again despite the fact that there are five times more white people in the U.S.

– FACT: From 2011 to 2013, 38.5 per cent of people arrested for murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault were black. This figure is three times higher than the 13% black population figure. When you account for the fact that black males aged 15-34, who account for around 3% of the population, are responsible for the vast majority of these crimes, the figures are even more staggering.

– FACT: Despite the fact that black people commit an equal or greater number of violent crimes than whites, whites are almost TWICE as likely to be killed by police officers.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control, between 1999 and 2011, 2,151 whites died as a result of being shot by police compared to 1,130 blacks.

Critics argue that black people are overrepresented in these figures because they only represent 13% of the population, but they are underrepresented if you factor in violent crime offenders. In other words, you would expect the number of blacks and whites killed by police to be roughly equal given that they commit a roughly equal number of violent crimes, but that’s not the case. Whites are nearly 100% more likely to be victims.

And what about black on white violence in general?

– FACT: Despite being outnumbered by whites five to one, blacks commit eight times more crimes against whites than vice-versa, according to FBI statistics from 2007. A black male is 40 times as likely to assault a white person as the reverse. These figures also show that interracial rape is almost exclusively black on white.

“Even allowing for the existence of discrimination in the criminal justice system, the higher rates of crime among black Americans cannot be denied,” wrote James Q. Wilson and Richard Herrnstein in their widely cited 1985 study, “Crime and Human Nature.” “Every study of crime using official data shows blacks to be overrepresented among persons arrested, convicted, and imprisoned for street crimes.”

It’s clear that the greater propensity for black people to commit violent crimes is a driving factor as to why blacks are becoming involved in more violent confrontations with police than their 13% population figure suggests they should be. If the 911 calls are coming from black areas and are related to black people committing violent crimes, then of course black people are more likely to be involved in violent confrontations with cops.

Does that justify police brutality in cases such as Freddie Gray, Walter Scott or Eric Garner? No. But it does demolish the ‘Black Lives Matter’ narrative that the general trend of black people being victims of violent encounters with police is solely down to the fact that cops are racist towards black people. Racism is a factor, but the statistics clearly show that it’s by no means the only factor, and some would argue not even the dominant factor.

But aren’t all these statistics undermined by the fact that black people are unfairly targeted and framed for crimes by police officers in the first place? Don’t higher arrest and conviction rates of blacks merely prove that police are racist? This argument is debunked by looking at the proportion of offenders identified – not by police – but by victims – as black. The National Crime Victimization Survey shows that the number of blacks arrested generally correlates with the number of offenders identified as black by victims.

Fuck off with quoting infowars.

Their statements were backed up by references from legitimate government sources Athos, or has any source not legitimized by non leftist sources ignored now?  They're becoming a sad little party.

Nothing does more to call into question the validity of an argument than to withhold the source of the information. You might as well put a banner across the top that says "Don't Believe Anything You Read Here".

Quote
DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU READ BELOW -- ALL STATISTICS ARE MADE UP AND INACCURATE

Anybody who posts an argument based entirely on statistical measurements, who then fails to identify the source of the underlying data is a complete moron.

Fuck off with using a source that cherry picks statistics in a single quote.
