YVW, MissBarbara.

Was not so difficult, right, to see that it is the people, those who would perform criminal acts, who present as trouble, problematic... so happy to find we are on the same page...

Not the tool, but the criminal persons, who need to be addressed fully by the Politicians, and their Neighbors, in order to stop the carnage.

Hand Guns are ILLEGAL in Chicago.. so, if not the gun (already illegal) what else could the problem be?  Any ideas?

Perhaps the criminals? Criminals break laws, it is what they do, so making guns illegal is no protection for criminals... criminals will continue to break the laws..

Joan, that's the most penetrating and groundbreaking insight you've ever posted here.

Before reading this, neither I, nor, I'm sure, anyone else, would have even begun to consider that criminals are responsible for crime, and that law-breakers are the ones who break the law.

Thanks for enlightening me!

Guns do not kill, harm, or wound people; people harm people.

This is the one that did it for me.  Surely it was no different for Saul on the road to Damascus.  Such insight.  A life changer.

Good to hear you finally 'got it'. Let us hope your focus will be removal of criminals from our midst, through education, or incarceration.

So, since we cannot stop cimminals from commiting murder and other crimes, why should we have any laws against murder or crime?

Having a law that is not enforced is worse than not having a law.
Murder, firearm use in crime, needs to carry a faster, more severe penalty, and be aggressively enforced, in the neighborhoods where such crime is endemic.

Criminals need to be removed from those communities and kept incarcerated for sufficient periods of time, for the criminal to AGE OUT of such criminal behavior.

Making the penalty more effective, more visible, less cumbersome for the City to bring quick, severe justice; not the direction urban law enforcement is taking today, unfortunately. Not only use of a firearm, but USE OF VIOLENCE must be enforced effectively.

So, since we cannot stop cimminals from commiting murder and other crimes, why should we have any laws against murder or crime?

So no problem with not permitting crimminals to have guns then?

Since nearly all mass shooters have either documented mental health issues or have made prior credible threats, how about we put the crazies in the same ‘no buy’ database as the criminals?

Disgustingly, that would get zero Republican support.

They are beholden to the NRA. Money in their political campaigns trumps (pun intended) common sense.

I don't think more laws is the answer. If someone wants a pistol or assault rifle, they know where to obtain one. It is the mentality of today that many, especially youths, figure why reason out a problem when you can just shoot to solve your problem. And that mentality will be hard to change.

The only problem I see with putting the crazies on the same list is what defines crazy?  What causes a person to go “Postal”.  Also what are the results we are looking for as a result of a law like you suggest. Obviously a law like this wouldn’t stop all mass shooting because crazy doesn’t always walk around where every one can see it. Another question I would have is how far will the gun grabbing politician take crazy? If a person loses their cool and knocks another out at a bar or something along those lines, does that person become one of those crazies? It’s already way to easy for anybody to be arrested and/or loose their firearms. Another law as you suggest would only stop another small portion with many slipping through the cracks because as Watcher said if a crazy wants a firearm then they will obtain one. The black market is pretty solid, drug, firearms, 30 round mags and the like. The removal of all firearms is next to impossible and against the constitution. As we have all said time and time again, we need to deal with the mental health in this country. Children , as Watcher expressed, handle things way different these days and seem to be more sensitive. I kinda think there is a culture of over-sensitivity on the left that is partially to blame. I’ll expand on this if there is interest but some how I don’t think it will be met with open minds.

Also you may be surprised here but I’m not an NRA member and haven’t been since the bump stock being outlawed after Las Vegas. Yet another law that does absolutely nothing to help prevent such mass shootings.

Persons found mentally incompetent by a Court are included in current background check procedures for firearm purchase/license.

However, the "allegation" about someone being 'unworthy' of firearm ownership is not, nor should such unsubstantiated allegations, be sufficient to prohibit legal purchase/ownership by a American citizen. (pesky 'Right' and all)

I have filled this out many times. If you pay attention to question 11 (f) on this form and then go to page 4 to read more on this question you will have a better understanding. Actually you may want to read the whole thing.

Chicago Mayor places curfew on alcohol sales. Criminals must commit their crimes, get their money to buy Alcohol by 9pm, beginning today.

With so many retail stores closed due to the Virus and Distancing Orders, the pressure is heavily on for these criminals, who through no fault of their own, must now complete the local stick-ups among a less available victim population and get their business done early, and still get to the Liquor store to buy by 9pm.

Another unforeseen consequence of this awful virus, which mainly impacts people of color, according to the media reports.. We need another 250 Billion to begin to study this racist virus, at least, and likely two to three times this amount before a reparations dollar figure can be named for the Virus alone.

Chicago Shootings are helping, along with seasonal flu deaths, to keep the death toll high enough, so along with the Corona Virus, the number of deaths can at least be maintained to 2019 standards, what with the lack of traffic deaths, and routine deaths from living life under what we think of as normal city life conditions.

Criminals who finish their liquor consumption earlier in the night than usual, with the new curfew on liquor sales, will have only dice, cards, and breeding to keep them busy, and with 'stay at home' orders, those activities are daytime as well... lots of work to keep Chicago's high death standards going until folk can return to normal business.

At least we still have Abortion, declared by the Mayor as Essential.

Do I sense criticism of Chicago's Mayor? She seems to have it all under control!

The Chicago Police are pretty well overworked right now. The first police officer who died from C-19 was just buried today. A small percentage cannot work due to sickness. Now they have to clear groups of people who refuse to heed the Mayor's call to not congregate. To top it off, Tuesday and Wednesday we had summer-like weather which drew even more people to be outside.  As our interim police chief is quoted as saying, "Chicago has two pandemics - one viral, the other violent."

Unfortunately, it is only the law abiding citizens that are heeding the Mayor's wishes.
