Still too early for anything Christmas for me. Definitely after Thanksgiving, maybe the week of, but not this early in the month, and DEFINITELY NOT IN OCTOBER!!

Yes! When we left from Salem MA. We had the radio on scan, and every so often it would hit a radio station playing christmas music.

It was Nov 1. I should not have to hear "all I want for Christmas is you" this damn early.  It was the same through New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio

Lots of Christmas decorations already up by us. Used to be Thanksgiving when one would see Christmas decorations up. Lucky I don't listen to the radio.  Heck, I am still waiting for all the leaves to fall.

This sort of thing infuriates me. Marketing/Advertising keeps wanting to promote holidays earlier and earlier. Come Christmas Eve they will be promoting Easter. There should be a legal limitt to how early Christmas can be promoted.  Although we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, it sounds a good cut-off point to me.

It is my sincere opinion that Christmas lights can go up on the house while the weather is still warm. They should NOT be turned on before 1 December. In my house, the tree doesn't go up until 15 December and it comes down on 8 January (7 January being Christmas for the faiths that follow the Julian calendar). As for the. music, in the stores - on US Thanksgiving. On the radio, like the outdoor lights - 1 December. Especially if you are one of those stations that plays the Christmas music 24/7.

When I was a kid the tree did not go up until dec 16th. Usually cause that was the weekend. My mom and dad would go shopping the next day, over the following week, where we were made to pick out gifts for our siblings. The three would slowly be decorated, until the 23rd, then the tree lights come on that night. The yard would be decorated and done before the 19th. My parents made the older children volunteer for a week straight at a charity. Then on the 23rd we would take gifts and food to family and the less fortunate. We also did not wake up our parents until 7:30 am. It was not until I was married with kids did I realize why. My parents stayed up all night preparing toys and stuff.

I kept the same traditions in my house, except no one touches or wakes the grown ups up until 8 am. Barbie dream houses are hella hard to build. plus trikes, bikes and scooters. The penalty is either a swift merciful death, or waiting until after lunch to open your presents. Which means after we get home from visiting the first round of relatives. And the biggest rule: No Christmas music until Daddy has been fully filled with turkey. No exceptions.

Hence the song, “the 12 days of Christmas.” So the tree came down on January 7.

As JRGB mentioned, on the Julian calendar, Christmas falls on January 7th. So Orthodox Epiphany is January 19th. We have everything down by then.
