I skinny dipped in Lake Superior.   Dan did too. He was in and out in 5 seconds (shrinkage is a real thing).  I made it about 2 minutes.

Estimated Water temperature is 56 degrees.   I don't think I've ever been in water that cold before.  Went in to my neck.

We were hoping for the northern lights and they never appeared.

That's a shame. I would love the chance to see them.

Still Hoping to see them, hoping for some clearer nights.  We're still on Superior.

Not going to one up you on cold water skinny dipping but...

Seaside Orgeon, we went to check out the goonies house and the various locations they shot the film, me and my wife. Middle of summer about fifteen years ago, when we lived in Longview, WA. The hotel was right on the beach and it was around one am, no one but people having campfires on the beach, mostly fucking were in the area, so we got horny and stupid. I mean this was the pacific, could not possibly be freezing in the summer right?

Wrong.

So very wrong. We both stripped down, and splashed into cold hell.

She only lasted a minute, I spread my arms wide and fell into the water.

I came out at a scared 9 year old boy. It was so cold it reversed my time and puberty back almost all the way to the beginning. I ran out grasping my manhood hoping it was still there.

Apparently North west Pacific is much colder than its southern sister.

I learned a vital lesson.

so we sat in the hotel's bath tub in hot water for awhile, trying not to wake up my cousin who was watching the kids.

But you and Dan are troopers, Mj. Woo for you!

I have mentioned this cold water tradition before… this year a young woman jumped in a hole in the ice on the river, and never came back up again. WCGW?

Theophany is Orthodox Epiphany, the commemoration of the baptism of Christ, his anointing by the Holy Spirit, and the commencement of his earthly ministry.

It is also the day that holy water for the coming liturgical year is blessed.  So naturally you must have vodka, zakuski, the breaking of ice, and river baptisms and plunges.

And lots of wet gowns, THO’s, and horny men “helping” the women in and out of the water.  Everyone gets laid afterwards.

Lake Superior is said to never give up it's dead. The water is so cold bodies won't float to the surface. You and Dan are lucky you got out when you did.

Most people who go into Lake Superior and expect to come out alive wear wet suits. Winter it's dry suits. FYI...In winter there's waves you can surf on, hence the dry suits

Don’t know if you’ve spent much time in Duluth Bob.  Reminded me of dinners at the Kitchigami Club, brandy Alexander’s at the Pickwick, the Congdon Mansion, Glensheen, and listening to the ice on Superior cracking at night like gunshots. Ex’s grandparents lived in Lutsen. Good times.

Yes, Duluth is interesting. The harbor with ships from all over the world. It's the terminus of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Glensheen Manor is fascinating. It's still the same as when it was built. Even the furniture which was custom made for each room.

Never confuse Duluth with Hibbing. They are as similar as Harrogate and Knottingly.

Duluth is where the mine owners lived. Hibbing is where the mines and miners lived.

Nice to see the school honoring him. As I recall people who went to school with him recalled Bob as a lackluster student.

No doubt it was his genius blocking the normal hum drum by the book education back then.

P.S. I started out life in a farm town in Central Iowa. Very different from the hard scrabble life of a mining town. Plus during Bob Z's time the mines were all played out and most people out of work. Times were hard.

I took the liberty of using the fact that the hospital where he was born was in Duluth.

You have knowledge of Knottingly and Harrogate  :sign_outstanding:

I spent 15 years with a woman whose mother is a British citizen. So we would visit at least once or twice a year, and traveled all over the Isles. I picked that comparison because I think Knottingley is a lot like Hibbing, a mining town that fell on hard times and never really got back up.

The Iron Range of Minnesota, located at a much higher elevation than Duluth, is where taconite ore was harvested for shipment to the steel mills in Pennsylvania. Rail cars would bring it down the mountain, where it was placed on ore boats in the harbor, then shipped down the Great Lakes to be offloaded. It is the source of most of the steel smelted in the United States.

So Harrogate is a fashionable spa town. Duluth is also a tourist destination. I always remember being at the airport in Duluth. The tourists were all tall and fashionably dressed. The folks from the Iron Range were usually much shorter, much less attractive, and looked like you would expect ore miners to look. Just a shocking disparity and contrast.
