-50 is the temperature one expects await him the Arctic or Antartic circles. It is extreme temperature for Minn.

It's going to be 18 in Dallas tonight. That is extreme temperature for here.

Wind chill is totally different from actual temps.  Wind is measured at airport, up high on the tower and wide open space.  It's not the same at gnd. level and sheltered by buildings and trees.  Ok, my little parts still shrivel even more. ;D

I did spent many years working out of the truck and as a courier, where I was in and out of the cold all day.  Just have to dress right.
Come for a visit.  St. Paul Winter Carnival is the end of this month.

The Arctic Vortex is coming this way!

Right now (7:38 am EST) it's over 50 and raining. Much of the 8-10" snowfall we got on Thursday night is now gone.

But starting around noon, the temperature is supposed to drop 40-45 degrees and the wind is supposed to pick up. By tonight it's supposed to be 5 with a wind chill of -15.

Bring it on!

We got around 12" of snow last night as an average in our area. 15° now and down to -6° by midnight. Tomorrows high going to be around 2°

Don't see any of our snow melting for awhile.

Brrrrrr.....it's 31° and expected to drop to 13° tonight.

MissB only thing I wanna be bringing on right about now is a suitcase on a plane headed for Fiji.   :D  Yeah, a week in Fiji with Philip Fusco as my houseboy sounds like the ticket.

Only thing I like about cold weather is that it brings lots and lots of birds to my feeders.

I'm glad we're not getting the snow others are.  Cold weather is tough enough.  OK, I'm staying inside, but the sound of the furnace running all the time sends shivers thru our bank account.

As to my post yesterday, I hope nobody thought I was trying to minimise our temps.  Right now it's 23 below, and that's dangerous.  My beef is the windchills get overplayed.  I've even heard the weather ppl give windchill when the temps are in upper 30s.  I've been out many times in sub zero temps due to work, but I know how to dress for it.  OK, now I'm sounding like my grandfather walking five miles to school in two feet of snow.  No doubt about it, I'm getting old.

One memory I'd like to share...the first time I experienced minus 40.  I'd just moved to Bemidji in northern MN.  I had to walk 4 block to the radio station at 5:30 AM to sign of.  The air was very dry as well as colder than I'd ever seen.  The sky was clear, stars bright, yet white flakes were falling all around me.  It was the humidity freezing into flakes.  It was beautiful.

It's all about eye balls, ratings, and advertising revenue... In other words, MONEY.  The lines between scholastic integrity and pulp journalism get blurred pretty quick.  How many people will tune in to hear about "below average temperatures" versus "the mega snowstorm of the century:  HERCULES!!!"  I thought so...

I want to know what the damn temperature is!  It took a half hour to do my morning commute, and the radio mentioned the temperature only once!  They mentioned the wind chill probably over a thousand times.  I have equipment that I am worried about, and the wind chill is meaningless when you are worried about a radiator freezing.

BTW, the temperature in GR currently is 8 above and we just had 4 inches of snow.  It is still coming down.

That's got to be bad, when you're used to much warmer.  One year in Mexico it was 70s during the day and 60s at night.  The locals were bundled in hooded sweats and looked miserable.  It's all relative.

Headlines in today's paper read Chiberia.  Was minus 16 at 7:30 this morning and that is not factoring in the wind chill.  We were just used to mild winters the past few years.  Now it is back to reality. Least the snow has stopped.

Most of the schools around us are closed today and tomorrow. My kids are still showing school for tomorrow but I figure if we get the cold like they are thinking, school will get canceled either late tonite or at 6am tomorrow.

Hard to stay sexy when you step outside in minus 14 degree weather (warmed up two degrees in 5 hours).  Major shrinkage.  Almost like a turtle.  Maybe GermanChick and me could warm ourselves up together. I definitely would "do" the Southern women.  8)

I know a couple of places I could keep you warm Watcher  ;D

I also found out why we were on a two hour delay - when its this cold, they have to warm up the buses for 4 hours ---  besides that, our garbage didn't get picked up because the garbage truck system (where they do the pick up of the can automatically) was frozen shut...

Lets just say that the South is ill equipped to handle this sort of weather - and I'm afraid I'm loosing most of my tropical plants in my greenhouse out back... :(

Another day below zero today, but single digits.  I do feel for the sotherners.  Up here we're prepared with proper clothes, engine heaters for cars, houses well insulated, etc.  Don't know how I cope with weather you've never seen before.  I still remember one year telling someone when it was 40 below that I was going to wait until it warmed up to 30 below before starting the truck.  He laughed...said only in Minnesota can you talk about it warming up to 30 below.  To you southeran "fragile flowers", share body heat....that's what my cats are doing.

You will never see a polar vortex, because the NY Times is up here, and won't care to make up a good name for any South Pole weather event, having succeeded their goal for removing Freon from industrial use, with South Pole mumbo jumbo, back in the Clinton administration, since determined irrelevant to climate change.
Refrigerator manufacturers sold lots of new ones, and people were forced to dump their older cars, which no longer worked for AC.

Change... poof!

The North Pole vortex, a change in the jet stream where it cannot ID the Canada/US border, so brings some Canadian weather to us, comes at an opportune time, as 2014 legislation on climate change works its way through many State legislatures, and languishes in the US House, as it should.

As the Senate gets around to returning from vacation, this too shall pass.
