As the South is not really prepared as much for winter storms as we are in the North, please take care stace and all you KB members who are in the path of this ice storm.  Hope you do not lose electricity.  Then that would really suck.

By the way, a balmy 19 degrees F here this morning with snow forecasted for Sunday evening into Monday.  The Cowboys are going to freeze when they play Da Bears here Monday night.

Don't worry 'bout me, I'm good!  I'm stuck in a motel until this ice nonsense thaws.  It took me just under 3 hours to drive across town (what's normally 40 min) on glare ice after the ice/sleet storm, and I figured it made more sense to *stay* here closer to work until the DRAMA eased off a bit.  The WiFi sucks... feels like dialup.

I hadda leave Dallas 'cos the power went down when the ice hit.  I woke Friday to a freezing house, with *no* ETA from Oncor on when the power would be up.  Yeah, well, thanks but NOT happening!  The newer areas of town have buried power lines, but all of the older areas are power lines on poles, and the iced trees were taking lines down ALL around town.

Finding a hotel/motel was... less than fun.  With 1000 canceled flights at DFW on Friday, EVERY single place within 5 miles of the airport was sold out.  I kept driving North of the airport until I wound up in the Flower Mound / Lewisville area and found a somewhat habitable place.  The roads still suck badly, but I can crawl at <20mph and get to work in 20 minutes from here.

By Tuesday/Wednesday the roads ought to be passable again and I'll head back home to Dallas.  My neighbors texted me that the power is on at home, so I'm just waiting until this LOVELY ice goes away.  Ice belongs in a drink, not on the freeways!

Don't worry, with the rise expected in sea levels, she is not long for that habitat.

Neither are the people living on the East and West coasts here in the U.S..

Finally back home!  The streets in Dallas are completely clear except for small patches of ice in The Usual Places.  Areas from Lewisville on North and most of West Fort Worth still have over an inch of ice on the roads, but the South and East areas of the Metroplex are 99% clear of that nasty white shit, except for shaded areas.

Everything in the refrigerator survived except for the cottage cheese.  I knew it was a goner but I wisely didn't open the doors and left it untouched when the power was down.  Figuring it was near freezing INSIDE while I'd decamped to Lewisville, the fridge fared very well.  No burst pipes anywhere, and I have my own bed to sleep in again.  Yipee!  I don't have to roll around in someone else's short-and-curlies!

A bunch of cars at work have a bevy of new dents, dings and outright smashed-up-shit, but then again I work with a load of brainless idiots, so that's to be expected.  ALL of the damaged cars were either going too fast, following too close, or not predicting the road ahead.  I've seen a lot of all three in the last several days, as well as people going WAAAYYYY too slow when the road conditions are GREAT, thus pissing off everyone ELSE on the road.  I passed one of those earlier going 35MPH on the I-35E while I was blowing along at 60.  The '35 south of the 635 was in 'very good' condition last Friday just hours after the ice and sleet hit.

In Texas, when the roads are wet, snowy or icy, the drivers drive either insanely slowly, or insanely fast.

Of course, when the roads are dry they only drive insanely slow or insanely fast.

I have always found that drivers who are driving 4-wheel drive SUVs drive the slowest.
