I watched "Jojo Rabbit" last night, and I loved it.
It's impossible to describe it in a few sentences. It's a comedy about a 10-year-old boy living in Nazi Germany in 1944, and the movie begins with his eagerly looking forward to his first day of Hitler Youth Camp. Oh, and his imaginary friend is Hitler himself, though a wackier version of the Nazi leader. I won't give the plot away, but it's a turns laugh-out-loud funny and shockingly tragic, extremely moving and filled with penetrating insight.
Yet it's a comedy. There have been other "Nazi comedies," like "The Producers" and "To Be or Not To Be," by while those rely more on slapstick and goofiness, "Jojo Rabbit" is much darker, and the comedy often derives from absurdity.
Plus, as a bonus for Toe, Scarlett Johansson plays Jojo's mother, and while I've never been a big fan of her acting, she does an amazing job with her role.
I very highly recommend it.
