Remove all the sequels, remakes, reboots and adaptations from Hollywood and you're left with fuck all. Production costs are so high that the it's a big gamble for a company to invest in a movie, so they play is safe. I recently heard the Naked Gun is being remade.

Well The Alien sequels were getting so bad that they become funny.
The first Alien was good, the second was also good, then it went down hill really fast.
Just saying...sometimes you need to leave a "good" movie alone, instead of screwing with it so much that it turns out as a terrible thing.
Love,
Liz

I never understood why they "needed" or "wanted" to do a remake of it.
it wasn't really necessary to do a remake at all.
(except for maybe make more money).

And yet, none of the nine films nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture and none of the five films nominated for Best Director are "sequels, remakes, reboots and adaptations."

Hardly "fuck all..."

yes, but a lot of those times when a sequel is made it doesn't make the money they expected or wanted it to.
In fact some sequels are so bad that the way they can save them selves is by putting it out on DVD and hope to recoup the cost.

Well, a lot of those times when any movie is made -- or, for that matter, any product whatsoever is made -- "it doesn't make the money they expected or wanted it to."

But sequels obbviously do, in general, make potloads of money, or they simply wouldn't make them.

P.S. One of the greatest movies ever made, in my opinion, is a sequel...

Personally, I can't think of a sequel that has been as good or better than the original.

Both good movies gentlemen, but can't and don't touch the originals - in my humble opinion.

Lethal Weapon 4

It's okay, but not the best of the series, again, in my opinion.

I'm not sure about the rest but I know 12 Years a Slave is adapted from a book. Anyway, I get all that but the fact remains that Hollywood is not the home of creativity. Even during awards season, many of the movies released are of a type. For instance, biopics and other movies based on real events tend to come out around this year, along with movies about prominent social issues. Those movies are as self-consciously made in order to win awards as the big blockbusters are in order to pull in big crowds.

Good point. And I'm sure some of the others are also adapted from other source material as well.

Then again, many of the Hollywood films considered among the greatest movies ever made were also adapted from other source material. For example, on the AFI Top 100 List, 8 of the Top 10 movies were based on other source material. Only two, Lawrence of Arabia (#5) and Singin' in the Rain (#10) are based on an original screenplay.

And I agree with you completely that "Biopics and other movies based on real events tend to come out around the end of the year, along with movies about prominent social issues. Those movies are as self-consciously made in order to win awards."
