Summertime as a kid meant not having to get up early for school. I remember always participating in the reading club. After reading so many books you would get a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. We would always go to the beach as a family. Then take a trip somewhere like the Grand Canyon or other touristy places like that. Sometimes it would get boring, and I was always anxious for school to begin again.

I was always anxious for school to begin also.    I could not wait to find out what friends were in my class.    I remember always being disappointed by either the teacher I had or a friend that was not in my class.

Summer Road trips usually meant going out to Nantucket Island for weeks.
While my parents loved it, I hated it. The island was a giant (in the summer anyway) baby sitting trap. As a kid you could go anywhere on the island (and there wasn't much there) "But" the ferries to the mainland were off limits (you actually needed a parental permission slip or a parent with you to travel ).  "But the seafood was fantastic....."
Now that I think back to bad my parents sold the house on the Island.

Love,
Liz

Elementary and Middle school for me on the last day meant going to your next grade class and meeting your teacher and seeing who was in your class, and also getting the now famous "summer reading list"....that we would have to do / read ( at least two books from).

Love,
Liz

I remember a friend and I learning to put on makeup.   We put on a lot.   And we thought we looked so pretty.       It took my sister sitting with us and showing us how to do it gracefully.    We practiced a lot.     My dad had taken pictures of us and I still have them.   I just looked at one a few weeks ago.    OH.  MY.  GOODNESS.

When we start, we all seem to subscribe to the more is more school.

Or, to be a little less charitable, the pre-teen New Orleans hooker look.

There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

"The pre-teen New Orleans hooker look." What a wonderful turn of phrase! I'll be sure to steal it and use it as my own at the next available opportunity!

A friend of mine described the trend of younger girls dressing up in revealing outfits far too old for their age as "The 'Lil Hooker Look." Just as good, to my mind.
