George Michael dead at 53

Singer George Michael, who sold more than 100 million albums over a pop music career spanning almost four decades, has died at the age of 53, his publicist said Sunday.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period," read a statement issued to the British media.

"The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

The BBC reported that an ambulance was called to Michael's home in Oxfordshire, England shortly before 2 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET) Sunday.

The report added that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Michael's death.

Michael had nearly died from pneumonia in late 2011. After receiving treatment in a Vienna hospital, he made a tearful appearance outside his London home and said it had been ''touch and go'' whether he lived.

Doctors performed a tracheotomy to keep his airways open and he was unconscious for some of his hospital stay.

Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London, Michael rose to fame as a member of Wham!, known for their hits "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", "Careless Whisper", "Everything She Wants", "Freedom", "Club Tropicana" and "Last Christmas."

Michael was set to release a documentary next year to accompany the reissue of his 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1. The film, which had the working title "Freedom: George Michael," was to be narrated by Michael and set to feature Mark Ronson, Mary J. Blige, Tony Bennett, Liam Gallagher, James Corden and Ricky Gervais.

Long time fan.  And met him once in Dallas.  "Careless Whisper" and "Everything She Wants" are both on my playlist.  Too soon.

Why you ask? Seriously? People, Musicians in general die young from either, 1) Drugs, 2)Disease or Illness, 3)Suicide, 4)Murder, 5)An Accident. Not that hard to figure out when you use logic.

Then there is Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Probably enough drugs and partying between the two to have put a dozen musicians in an early grave.

They are like Ozzy Osbourne, their bodies have gotten so used to the Drugs they have taken that they developed a strong tolerance to it. I saw Today, George Michael reportedly died from Heart failure, so it could have been cause from Heart disease, Drugs, Pneumonia (he had that 5 years ago and almost died), if he secretly had AIDS that could have caused heart failure. An autopsy will reveal the truth soon enough. I'm sure in time Jagger, Richards and Osbourne's drug history will catch up with them. Just a matter of time.

TC, come on, another musicians dead, I'm pissed and you have to have a fit? It's not always about drugs or suicide or murder. I'm just tired of musicians dying so young WHAT EVER the cause.

Death is a part of life, get used to it. So what if a Celebrity dies young, who cries for all of the non Celebrities who die young? If some person aged 23 dies, no one cares, but some Celebrity dies young, then everyone looses their minds! Ok, it's sad, I give you that and it's News worthy, fine, but if they die young its not a reason to go into hysterics! Morn them, pray for their Families and move on.

I LOVE how you're missing the whole point of my comments. It's not about you, you know.

WTF are you talking about?! You cry that Celebrities are dying young and I just tell you the reasons why and you can't handle it. Your comment just now makes absolutely no fucking sense whatsoever! Ok, he died young, mourn him, but going crazy like it's the end of the World is ludicrous! You take after my Brother goes Bat shit crazy a famous person dies, it's life deal with it and NO it's not about me and I never said that it was! You want answers about why we die go see a Priest or a shrink! Mourn for George if you want then move on.

This was a shocker.  He was one of those artists that got better with time.  Really liked all of "Older."
