Is given to an appointed Chair for a special committee or a investigation such as now being conducted? Is it done for patriotism? Fame? There surely must be great responsibility and many hours and days required? What is the scope of power? Is clerical staff hired or allocated?

I don't recall this information being taught is school studies and I am curious if anyone knows how it works.

Good questions; I haven't a clue, but I'll pass on any info I come across.

Edit:

I found this. It covers the history of, and outlines the requirements for and structure of Special Prosecutors. Basically -- more than you will probably want to know about the subject. Did you know that Cox (who investigated Nixon) was the first one? Me neither:

The Nixon era was a first for many things.  Most not good.

I'd hope we would have learned our lesson and not had to revisit the lessons the Nixon administration taught us.  :-[

No one knew being president was so complicated and so much work!

There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

Does anyone have the vote count for Nixon's two elections? Was it close, or was he clearly preferred as President by those who voted at the time?

I'd hope we would have learned our lesson and not had to revisit the lessons the Nixon administration taught us.  :-[

Nixon's was first elected president after running on getting all the soldiers out of Vietnam.  That was in 1968.  The country was tired of the war by then.  So what did he do?  He invaded Cambodia in April, 1970 and by the end of his first term, the US was still in Vietnam, albeit at much lower troop levels. In both of his wins, the Democrats did not field a strong candidate.

Wilson was re-elected president after running with the campaign promise "He kept us out of war." That was 1916. He was inaugurated on March 4, 1917 -- and he asked Congress for a Declaration of War on April 2, 1917.

The more things change...

So... President Nixon won both the Electoral and the Popular vote... TY...

Both times... and were Democrats/Media pleased, settled and prosperous?

I would hazard to guess that the Democrats weren't pleased.  As for the media they were probably split pretty evenly on the issue.  The parties and the country were not nearly as polarized then (the GOP has swung way to the right since then as well), and Nixon was not attacking the free press like Trump is doing.
