Two lawyers, one from Chicago and the other from Woodbury, Minnesota were arrested Friday on federal fraud charges, accused of using copyright lawsuits to extort millions of dollars from hundreds of people who had downloaded pornographic movies.
Federal prosecutors say the pair used sham entities to purchase copyrights to pornographic movies, then sued people who downloaded the movies, collecting some $6 million in settlements from 2011 through 2014.
The Minnesota U.S. Attorney said the lawyers conduct was outrageous and cast doubt on the integrity of the legal profession.
