Lina Hidalgo

Lina Hidalgo is Harris County Judge. Judge is actually a poor title for her job as she effectively is the mayor of the county (the city of Houston takes up 95% of the county). She goes to monthly county commissioner meetings, oversees the county budget and in an emergency (tornado, etc.) she oversees the public safety agencies.

She swept into office four years ago. She replaced the former judge, who was up to his eyeballs in scandal. She also took advantage of the anti-Trump wave of 2020. With that said:

Lina is only 28 years old. She speaks in a childlike voice. That, and her childlike ways have earned her the nickname Dora (as in Dora the Explorer). Because a hurricane is about to hit the Texas coast she held a press conference. Her voice was shaking the the entire time and she looked like she was about to cry. Not exactly the behavior you want to see in a public official in an emergency.

The Harris County Judge also has administrative responsibility for all courts in the county. Lina took the long weekend off, even though there were obvious warnings that hurricane Beryl would hit the city. As of 5 PM yesterday, no decision had been made concerning closing the courts today. The individual judges finally resorted to making those decisions themselves. We finally got worried about 8 PM last night that courts would be closed today. Thank goodness.

Obviously, at age 28, I view her as a child. There’s been some mad sweeps in local elections in Houston. Even in the Democratic Party. Every sitting male judge was defeated in the primary this year. We’re losing about 80 years of experience on the bench for what will soon be a bunch of POC youngsters.

At 8,778 square miles, the Greater Houston Area covers more ground than any other major city in America.  It is larger than the state of Massachusetts.
