The current issue of Entertainment Weekly is a "Special LBT Issue":

A friend gave me a copy because she thought I might be interested in it. (I'm not, be she's far too sweet and well-meaning a person for me to be even slightly offended.)

I found the whole thing to be more than a little troubling. Other than the cover story (a fascinating portrait of a trans actor playing a trans character), I found the whole "hooray for homos" vibe annoying -- starting with the sub head ("America's Transformation").

If America has transformed itself in its views of LGBT people, then there's no need for a special issue on the topic. And if it has not (note: has not), what's the point of picking out a specific subset of the entertainment world for scrutiny? I mean, can you imagine them producing a "Special Black People Issue"? More to the point, should LGBT entertainers -- as LGBT people -- be singled out at all? Does being an LGBT person make them better actors, writers, singers, etc.?

And I found the article "The 50 Gay TV and Movie Characters We Love The Most" to be especially loathsome.

How about condescending being more like it. Also is this Issue "really" necessary?

Think about it. Is more than half of everything printed in what ever magazine necessary? :P

I'm glad this was posted, as it brought to my attention that "Orange Is The New Black" is now showing on Netflix.

It is a big deal for the LGBT individuals in the business, or for those aspiring to be in the entertainment business.    I look at it the same way that my closest black friends think of the BET Award shows - they do not care to watch it.   Like myself, they are Golden Glove and Oscars fans.   But their 22 year old daughter, who hopes to be an actress one day, will not miss the BET award shows - which I think there might be 3 of them now.    Give it a few years and we may be watching the LGBT Entertainment Award show.
