This is an older story but I don't remember seeing anything posted here about it. I am not caught up enough to say if there is a double standard going on or not but still felt that this topic could generate some board interaction. I'd like to hear what others think about her case, and more so, the thoughts on men's sports handling these issues compared to how this case is, for now, being handled

Hope Solo, the star goalie for the U.S. women’s soccer team, has domestic violence hanging over her head as she preps for the World Cup – while several NFL players have been ousted for similar charges – but experts say there's not enough evidence to call it a double standard.

Solo is charged with two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault in Washington state stemming from a June 21 incident with her half-sister and 17-year-old nephew at a family gathering. She has pleaded not guilty and the case is scheduled for trial Nov. 4. She faces up to six months in jail if convicted. For now, the team and major sponsor Nike are standing by her.

Solo’s case has drawn attention following Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s indefinite suspension from the National Football League over the assault of his wife, which was captured on security footage.

The U.S. women’s national soccer team begins its pursuit of a berth in next summer’s World Cup on Wednesday night and, as she awaits resolution of domestic-violence charges against her, goalkeeper Hope Solo will continue to play for the team despite the controversy surrounding her.

The U.S. plays Trinidad & Tobago in the first game of the CONCACAF Women’s Championships, which serves as qualifying for World Cup, in Kansas City and Solo’s presence on the roster has been a source of heated debate about whether there’s a double standard for men and women accused of domestic violence. Most recently, the decision to keep her on the roster was criticized by a former teammate, but the U.S. Soccer Federation has said it intends to allow Solo to play while the legal process continues. The team’s coach, Jill Ellis, defended that decision that last week.

“There was a lot of thought and a lot of discussions within U.S. Soccer, and certainly we acknowledge that these are very serious issues, but after careful thought and consideration we just determined to stand by our decision to let this legal process play out and have Hope remain with the team,” Ellis said.

Solo is scheduled to go to trial Nov. 4 on misdemeanor charges stemming from an altercation on June 21 involving her half-sister and 17-year-old nephew. She has entered a plea of not guilty. Judging by tweets to her over 800,000 followers Tuesday, Solo, who apologized last summer for what she said was an “unfortunate incident,” is focused on the game:

According to docs obtained by TMZ, a fearful nephew pulled a gun on Hope Solo but she kept on attacking. It appears the gun was either not working or it was just a pellet gun.

The boy told cops that Hope appeared to be drunk when she came over to the nephew’s home and was angry that she missed a flight.

They then began arguing and Hope Solo followed him into a room and began calling him a “Pussy” because he called his mom (Hope’s sister).

“I then told her to get her cunt face out of my house,” the boy said to police.

This enraged Hope and she allegedly went on the attack, grabbing the boys hair and punching him sever times, resulting in a blood ear among other things.

“I then went into a back room and got an old gun that does not work, pointed it at her and she kept coming at me. She didn’t leave but walked around me cornering me like a shark.”

Hope Solo finally left and the boy called the cops. But she then came back and started to attack her sister.

I remember reading a small article buried in the back section of the sports pages about this.  Domestic violence crosses both genders and should be dealt with equally. Some NFL teams have stood by their players charged with domestic violence saying they will wait till the courts find them guilty or not guilty so maybe the Women's Soccer Team is doing the same. Just a guess.

She was also one of the folks who had their nude pics hacked from The Cloud. So it is kind of humorous the type of language the kid was using in the piece from TMZ.

Ley's hope she gets prosecuted to the full extent of the law. They'd certainly do that if it were a man attacking his minor niece.

I agree.

But she is, in fact, being prosecuted "to the full extent of the law." She was arrested and charged, and her trial is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

In cases like this, confusion arises when commentators fail to note the difference between criminal prosecution and team or league sanctions.

Over and above the obvious difference between what she did and what Ray Rice did -- and the fact that this incident strains the definition of "domestic violence" to the breaking point -- there are currently several professional male athletes who are continuing to play despite pending felony prosecutions.

So, where's the "double standard"?

The underwear stealing Dallas Cowboys dude will face more trouble with his own teammates then the local justice system for dissing his fellow players. The double standard is multiplied with notoriety.

Sure wish I could get her to inflict a little 'domestic violence' on me......sigh

While you're waiting in vain for that apology, why don't you make yourself useful by getting on your knees and opening your mouth
