Difference between European and american metal scenes.

Now, now.  While I weep over the state of American music, there are still a few good groups out there.  Heavier stuff like Killswitch Engage or Lamb of God, metal/techno like Rob Zombie (who still puts on a hell of a show), or hard rock/metal like Disturbed and Godsmack.

American metal isn't dead...yet.  I give it a few more years.

Haha, nice. I don't mind BTBAM, I really like the "Colors" album, but even I can admit that they can be pretentious try-hards. I mean . . . jesus Fucking christ, they named their band after a shitty lyric from a fucking Counting Crows song! Counting fucking Crows!!!!! That's the most unmetal shit I've ever fucking heard of.

I think Lamb of God is just about the only American metal band that I could name off.

That's not far from the truth cause the European fans enjoy Metal music more than Americans do. America had its rush of Metal dominance in the 1980s,but dropped it for the Grunge crap of the 90s. Now Metal is more welcomed in Europe than it is here in America. We still have Metal acts, yes here in the US,but where are all the Metal Music Festivals in America that are widespread in Europe? One Metal band I enjoy and watch their DVDs is Manowar. On every DVD they have put out they have showed the band playing Metal Festivals and where?? In Europe! Most of those shows have been held in Germany, Italy and Brazil to name a few. Here what do we have? Ozzfest, okay,but where is it? Ozzfest has died off since Ozzy has been making new solo music and Sabbath was with Ronnie James Dio as Heaven and Hell. No offense to those bands,but why stop doing Ozzfest just because Ozzy went back doing his solo gig and they re-united with Dio? They could've kept Ozzfest going since its the only Metal Festival here that made any kind of money. The ones overseas have been going on for years and still do. The Wacken Festival is the longest one and continues to this day with American and European acts still playing at this show. So I don't disagree with the fact that the Europeans take more to Metal than we do. They don't back away from it for a new sound, they still love it more than ever before!

It don't help when the American record companies don't really promote the new music coming out by the American Metal artists. Then we have people downloading music for free off the Internet it makes it hard for these artist to make anything or want to make new music cause the CDs just sit there. Of course if the music stores and record companies reduced the cost of CDs then people would not download music for free. Then you got the artists who don't really tour like they used to, look at some of the dates Ozzy Osbourne has done. He only does major cities in the US,Canada and Europe, but hardly any of the smaller cities. Heaven and Hell and KISS were doing their tours all over the US and played in more cities and states. Then you got the European fans who are more loyal and crazy to their favorite Metal bands going out buying their music, tickets and merchandise and like I have said before, have all of their festivals for Metal unlike the US who don't have much Metal Festivals. Then there a lot of bands who loose their fans cause they tire of these bands when they get older and go listen to the younger bands more or quit listening to them altogether cause these bands either can't get along with each other or change their sound and image so many times its annoying.

I would agree that a big part is that the only bands that get pushed are the bands that make big money. Here in the Detroit area we have 1 rock station and they are stuck on AC/DC, 70's rock and only the most main stream chart topping metal around. The only other option we have is a channel out of Canada but they play more of an alternative mix with rock/metal mixed in. They are the one I listen to if not on Satellite radio. The US music scene is now run by 12-14 year old girls and their parents check book.

Being in Detroit you probably have to hear KISS 24/7  on the radio. You are right the US music scene now is mostly made up of artist catered to the sexual hormones of preteen girls to dream and cream over some young guy or guy band who's gonna be a has been before he's 21. Then you have the female artist who are like Britney Spears clones who last for awhile and fade away and then its the Rap stars who are all over the place sampling other people's music and say it's my new song when really they're rapping to music from a movie or a song from Van Halen, Aerosmith,KISS or Queen (Wild Thing, Walk This Way,Funky Cold Madena and Ice Ice Baby) Sampling and/or covering Jamie's Crying, Walk This Way, Christine Sixteen, and Under Pressure.

I think there is a big generation gap being exposed in this thread.

It looks like a lot of people think of KISS, ac/dc, Ozzy, etc as being "metal". Maybe that's what metal was 20-30 years ago, but metal has evolved to the point where I would now consider almost all of that stuff to be rock.

When I talk about current metal, this is the kind of stuff that I have in mind:

What I was saying in my posts is that European Metal bands and their Metal fans are more into the Metal scene as opposed to what the American Metal bands used to be. Point I was trying to get across is "Why can't the US Metal bands and fans be more like the European ones?" The only ones who come close are Manowar! They mostly perform overseas cause they are more appreciated there than they are here. Yes, they have a US fan base,but the Europeans are more loyal to them then the Americans are! Today's Metal is more stronger over there than here in the US. The US Metal is not what it once was like in the 70s and 80s.

Not sure if there is much point in bringing this back up front but I do know that a few of us OP are still here and my tastes in music have really changed over the last two years or so.

American metal is still, from what I can tell, very different from European metal but we are trying to change that. Metalcore music is HUGE with shit loads of new bands starting up all the time. I have posted a bunch of it over the past months without much comments from anyone.

My newest download was the new "Bullet For My Valentine" album. I have it but not able to give a listen yet. "Crown the Empire" new album is great. I've had that in the CD player for a few days now. Driving the family crazy.

These bands don't fill 3 day shows and things like that but they do put on great 10-12 hour shows at local venues with 15-20 + bands all getting between 20-35 minutes each to fucking rock the house down. We've been to a few of these shows and look forward to more over the next few years.

Yea, OK i get it, bleach, but why?? In listening to Metal in all of it's forms, a lot of the new stuff coming out from the younger groups really kicks ass. And they are not afraid to give props to the older bands that cut the path for them. You might not like the scream metal, there are other styles out there with the new bands also.

Hell, in looking at some of the posted bands from other members, I find it hard to call them anything other than heavy rock. Between some of the posts Insatiable and even yourself, there was some great stuff shared tho.

Cool and agree. Part of my hope in bumping it was to bring some real metal back to it and see where it goes.
