My mom gave me a diminutive of of the #6 most popular name the year (which would have made me Benjamin this year). The shortened version she gave me (138th most popular) would mean my name this year would be Ryder.
As an example, she named me Jim instead of James and when she told people my name she always said, "His name is Jim, not James."
True story...until I started school, I thought my given name was Jim-not-james.
Hey, I was 5, what did I know.
