The crowded bars this past weekend celebrating St Paddy's Day was one of the main reasons our governor took the step to close bars and restaurants. He cited the huge crowds and said that people weren't taking the virus seriously.

Today is GIRL SCOUT DAY, in honor of the 1st troop meeting in 1912. FN1.  And Cuz Dom says it’s also NATIONAL MILKY WAY DAY. FN1
*1664: New Jersey: New Jersey became a colony of England, when England's King Charles II granted land on the east coast of North America known as New Netherland to his brother James, Duke of York.
*1884: “The W”: Mississippi established the 1st U.S. state college for women – Mississippi University for Women (MUW or "The W"); now a coed public university in Columbus, Mississippi; formerly “The Industrial Institute and College for the Education of White Girls,” and later Mississippi State College for Women.
*1894: 1st Coke: Coca-Cola was bottled and sold for 1st time in Vicksburg, Mississippi, by local soda fountain operator Joseph Biedenharn.
*1912: Birth of Girl Scouts: The Girl Guides (later renamed the Girl Scouts of the USA, GSUSA) are founded in the US by Juliette Gordon Low of Savannah, GA, with the first troop of 18 Girl Guides, this was a movement that originated in Britain along with the Boy Scouts.
*1933: 1st Fireside Chat: Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the nation for 1st time as President of United States, and it was also the 1st of his 30 radio "fireside chats".
*1949: The Ink Flag: raising of the hand-drawn “Ink Flag” or Degel HaDyo, דֶּגֶל הַדְּיוֹ‎, over the police station at Umm Rashrash, future City of Eilat “is considered to mark the end of “The War of Independence,” (מלחמתהעצמאות‎, Milkhemet Ha'Atzma'ut) aka Palestine War, in Arabic الن” كبة‎ ,the Nakba (lit. Today is THE EQUIRRIA (aka Ecurria, from equicurria, or "horse races") the 2nd of two ancient Roman festivals of chariot racing, or perhaps horseback racing, held in honor of Roman god Mars – one Feb 27, the other Mar 14. It is also PI DAY – holiday commemorating mathematical constant π (pi); celebrated on March 14 (or 3/14), since 3, 1 and 4 are 3 most significant digits of π in decimal form. And Cousin Dominic says it’s NATIONAL POTATO CHIP DAY.
*1838: “Philadelphia Burning”: four days after Antislavery groups opened PENNSYLVANIA HALL, aka “The Temple of Free Discussion,” at 6th & Haines Sts (between Arch & Race Sts) to have a place to meet, a white mob broke into the Hall, ransacked & set fire to the building, while the Philly police stood by watching and the Philly firefighters spray down neighboring buildings, NOT the Hall, it burned to ground. Mob also burned down the Shelter for Colored Orphans. And, not surprisingly, the Philadelphia Police did NOT ARREST ANYONE for setting the fires.
*1939: Slovak Secession: Slovakia seceded from Czechoslovakia to become separate pro-Nazi state, as troops occupy Czechoslovak Provinces of Bohemia & Moravia, in gross violation of Munich Agreement. This was last step on road to WWII and “The Final Solution” in Europe.
*1943:“The Dean”: Aaron Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man” played for 1st time in NYC.
*1945: Mourning & Memorials: Special services were held in many American synagogues around the world to mark an end of a week-long period of mourning for  millions of Jews murdered by Hitler and his cohorts. At the same time Winston Churchill wrote to Laura Wingate, widow of Orde Wingate the British officer who had helped trained Jewish fighters during 1930’s, to applaud her plan to build a memorial to her late husband on the grounds of Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Orde had been killed while fighting Japanese in Burma during WWII. At a time when Brit officer corps ranged from pro-Arab to anti-Semitic, Wingate stood out as a “chever” (friend) to Jewish people in the truest sense.

Unless my public school math skills have failed me, wouldn't he have been 75 or 76 the year he died?

St. Patrick's Day Myths

Some contend that Patrick died as late as 493 AD when he was more than 100 years old. Most, however, accept that he died in 461 at a healthy age of 76. It's generally accepted that Saint Patrick died - and was buried - in Downpatrick near Belfast. A large granite stone marks the spot, placed there in the early 20th century to prevent pilgrims from taking fistfuls of grave-soil away with them.

*note: I just cut and paste these. I don’t edit or research them.
