Although I don't like to think of myself as an education snob, I notice that a lot of the members here are verbally skilled--thespians, lawyers, authors, story tellers, other traits that draw on literary / authorial / like-to-talk skills.
I feel drawn toward the literary arts. I like good literary style. Not exactly a grammar nazi, but I like to see language employed with verve and originality. I enjoy reading a few foreign languages with styles that are close to what I was taught to appreciate by my teachers.
So I will kick off by saying I have a master's degree but not in English, have been a lifelong reader since being gifted with a 20-volume encyclopedia set at age six, took grammar lessons in English when teachers still had an MA degree in English, took five years of Latin, two years of Spanish, self-taught in French, read bi-lingual opera librettos in Italian, French, German, Russian. For all that, I think I am above average in language skills, but probably not in the top ten percent. Maybe around 75-80 percent.
Where would you place yourself?
