I just recently rediscovered writing by hand again. I've been writing my stories exclusively on a computer so I don't leave a paper trail. But now I find writing by hand makes getting the storyline out easier. With the weather warning up where I am I want to write and enjoy the weather. Of course for certain stories I don't want people reading over my shoulder. I don't have a back yard or balcony.

Has anyone tried writing outdoors?

I do from time to time. Lately I've been camping a lot. By a lot I mean I just came back this morning from my 4th camping trip in 2 weeks! While it's impractical when backpacking to take the laptop (and my handwriting is so bad that I'd qualify for a medical degree by my signature alone), I still an sit back and imagine what I have for characters and what I want them to do. Sometimes random bits of inspiration hits or I see something that would be fun to include in a story (or even become it's own). In those cases I either text myself a short synopsis or even dictated myself a note on my cell. Keep in mind, where I camp there usually isn't any sort of cell phone service so these are just notes for me. :)

I can't explain why my hand-writing has gotten so bad when it used to be decent in school.

Btw, Hammocks are awesome places to write!

I've mentioned this several times here on KB, I had started writing erotic stories when I was eighteen. I have like a dozen looseleaf binders stuffed with all kinds of themes.
I'd started surfing the web in 2008, and started finding a lot of erotic stories I liked. But I found I couldn't post stories on those sites. KB was the first site I found I could do that and in 2010 I pretty much stopped writing stories on paper and posted them right to KB.
I found the transition changed the way I wrote. I used to write stories that ran ten, fifteen, even twenty looseleaf pages long, both sides. And many I didn't finish. Posting directly to the internet I learned to shorten my stories greatly AND complete all of them.
Another thing I learned - and this is in line with your original post - is that if I now write out my story on paper first, I lose interest in posting it on here after. I lose the original motivation. So no more writing on paper.
As far as writing outdoors goes...

Interestingly enough I have the exact opposite problem. Writing on computer leaves me with too many ideas to get down. I tend to rush. My stories also tend to be shorter but I feel I could have done more with the storyline or characters.

Interesting! I find I tend to have lots of ideas myself, and a lot of my stories "write themselves".
I don't tend to outline my stories in advance. I'll have a title, most likely the story code, a brief idea for the story or idea for a scene in a story, and maybe an photo I found during a Google Image Search that inspired the story.
As soon as I start writing, the stories flows out of me effortlessly [most of the time]. I feel like Thad Beaumont in Stephen King's The Dark Half channeling George Stark. My inner writer is no psycho, lol, but he is a perv. ;-)
I never know going in how long a story will be. I tend to worry it'll be too short. But sometimes I find a story will go on a lot longer than i'd have expected it to, but in a "good" way... :P

All you need is a pad of paper, a pencil and an eraser.
Free write to your hearts content (about anything).
The nice thing about the pencil is that an eraser can fix something for you.

PS: I've kept a diary since I was 12 years old, I'm sure with what's in it there are at least a few stories about growing up.

Hi Elizabeth.  The act of writing is not waht I have problems with.  It's the possibility of someone reading over my shoulder in a public place and see I'm writing a sex story.

I'd like to be able to write erotica in public and not worry about trouble like that.

I often write whilst I am on train journeys... always with pen/pencil and notepad... I find writing in pencil makes it more difficult for peering eyes to read whatever I have on paper. I always try to find a quiet seat but that's not always possible... Of course, if it's obvious that someone is reading your work then a simple...'what do you think of it so far?' should embarrass them enough to make them look away...

Good luck outdoors anyway...

Choose places that you can't be overlooked, a park bench, the seat in the corner of a coffee shop and if someone is peering over your shoulder tell them to jog on and not be so nosey.

I basically loathe writing by hand. I have a "blank page phobia" that can be crippling. It's far easier for me to get a story going if I can at least START without looking at the writing surface until it's got a few sentences on it by just looking away or at the keyboard.

So no, I almost never write outside.
