Speech to text software

I would appreciate the benefit of members' experience and/or suggestions for an effective, but free or even modestly priced relating to the captioned subject. I'm running Windows 7 Professional which after some cursory research I find has a speech recognition capability but I'm wondering if its good the horses, as it were. I'd hate to find out after a fair bit of expenditure of time its not very effective.

Implementation of a complex app like speech to text is problematic. Microsoft is well known to doing things half-assed to get their foot in the door and shut down competition. There are full apps like Dragon which have good reviews.
