Disappointing Changes From a Book in a Movie

Shiela has written of her disappointment at a major change to a character in Wheel of Time.

Who else has been greatly disappointed about a major change in a movie from the book it was adapted.

Mine is "The Bridge On The River Kwai". It's a WW II story of British POWs being forced to build a bridge crossing the river Kwai. The ending of the book is totally changed in the movie.

It's still a great movie with a stellar performance by Alec Guinness. I preferred the book ending so if you want to see the movie, skip the book.

So, what's your book to movie adaptation disappointment?

The Bridge on the River Kwai is widely recognized as one of the greatest films ever made. It was the highest-grossing film of 1957 and received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. The film won seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture) at the 30th Academy Awards. In 1997, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress. It has been included on the American Film Institute's list of best American films ever made. In 1999, the British Film Institute voted The Bridge on the River Kwai the 11th greatest British film of the 20th century.

But Bob liked the book better.   :emot_laughing:

Naw...naw. Liked the book's ending better. It was crushing the first time I saw it. I've watched the movie several times since. I've accepted the movie ending was more palatable for the masses. Gotta have that happy ending.

SPOILER. In the book, the original story, they fail to blow the bridge. The Colonel (Alec Guinness in the movie) stops them and saves "his". bridge.

Yes, watch the movie, it's great, but then Alec Guinness is in it. 'Nuff said.

NOTE: When searching for the movie it's "...on the River Kwai"... not Over.  I've heard that so many times. :D

I have it in my library. Bought a copy back when my son and I were debating the list of greatest war movies ever. It’s on the list. We watched it together. I always love watching iconic movies with him for the first time.  Enjoy hearing his impressions of films I have seen a dozen times before.

My daddy used to do that.
"Okay hun, watch this."   I'd be watching, but he would be watching me for my reaction.  I'd always play it up because I could feel his eyes on me.

He’ll ask to watch Casablanca or The African Queen. He knows I am a Bogie fan. No one wants to watch a black & white film in the 21st Century. But he humors me.

My daughter doesn't like the old B&W movies. She's.so used to the special effects of today. And as SF is her favorite genre it's easy to see why she needs the CGI.

I did get her to take "The Day The Earth Stood Still' home with her.

She called me a few days after she got home. She loved the show even without a bunch of special effects or CGI
Strange what good acting and a.clear well defined plot can do for a movie.

Reactors on Youtube can make as much as much as 4.35 for every 1,000 views, but if it is copyrighted material, like a song or movie, it can be half as much or even less. However, comma, most set up an account on Patreon because, first, they can make some coin (subscribers get better access for higher amounts of donation), and second, Patreon isn't as strict on copyright rules. With that said, reactors will post 2 to 3 videos a week (and a few, with song reactions, will post up to three times a day). So, some reactors are discovering, and loving, old black & white movies for the reason, that pre CGI, a movie had to be well written to have lasting appeal.
